Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 3/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Wechsel's trail weight (inner, fly and poles) is 2,544 g, in the 2.0–2.69 kg band; total with pegs and accessories 2,840 g. OUTDOOR magazine weighed 2,710 g.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 8/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.
Fly 5,000 mm HH is in the 3,000 mm+ band; the 7,000 mm floor is over 2,000 mm, so nothing is taken off. Seams are taped. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.
Wind
Estimate: only 1 review about wind (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 8: Clearly better than most.
Not enough evidence: only OUTDOOR magazine's wind-tunnel test covers it (the tent kept its shape to 100 km/h and was pressed flat at 110 km/h, from the front and from the side, where the poles bent). It calls it stable enough for many regions. We found no second wind test or review.
Space
Estimate from maker's specs: berths and tent shape (no floor area published) 5/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Estimate from maker's specs
Packed size
From maker's figures 4/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 4: A bit below average.
Packs to 48 cm long x 18 cm across: 3.1416 x 9 x 9 x 48 = 12,214 cm³, so 12.21 L, in the 10–14.9 L band. OUTDOOR magazine measured 7.8 L, which would be a 3.
In short
Good for
- Two campers on a budget who want a freestanding tent with two doors and two porches
- Summer to early autumn trips, from cycling to short walking trips
- Anyone who wants to pitch the inner on its own on warm nights
Strengths
- Freestanding geodesic with two crossing aluminium poles; the inner pitches first, so it can be left up alone on warm nights
- Fly 5,000 mm and floor 7,000 mm HH with taped seams, the top rain band
- Two doors and two porches, so neither sleeper climbs over the other
- Kept its shape to 100 km/h in OUTDOOR magazine's wind-tunnel test
- 225 cm lying length (Wechsel), suiting tall sleepers
- Rated 'very good' overall by OUTDOOR magazine (2023), which praised easy pitching and good weather protection
Weaknesses
- 2,544 g trail weight is heavy for two (about 1.3 kg each)
- Packs to 48 x 18 cm (12.2 L), large for a two-person tent
- Tight inside: OUTDOOR magazine measured only 1.6 m² usable inner area and says space is just enough for two
- In OUTDOOR's wind-tunnel test the poles bent side-on at 100 to 110 km/h
- Wechsel's own FAQ says the PU coating on its Travel Line tents hardens over the years
- Floor area is not published, so space is an estimate, not a reviewed score
- The shops list it as three seasons; Wechsel's page gives no season rating, so that is our assumption
