Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 4/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 4: A bit below average.
Vango gives a total weight of 2.26 kg, in the 2.0-2.69 kg band. World of Camping prints 2.17 kg for the same tent and the reviewers 2.17-2.2 kg; both are in the same band.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 8/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.
Fly 3,000 mm HH is in the top band, which a maker figure alone is the 4 band at most. Vango publishes no hydrostatic head for the PE groundsheet, so GO Outdoors' listed 10,000 mm stands in, and no point comes off.
Wind
Estimate from maker's specs: maker's season rating (fewer than 3 reviews about wind) 5/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
No published review says how it copes with wind, so this is an estimate from the maker's season rating.
Space
Estimate from maker's specs: berths and tent shape (no floor area published) 7/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 7: Better than most.
Estimate from maker's specs
Packed size
From maker's figures 5/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Vango gives 50 cm long x 15 cm across: 3.1416 x 7.5 x 7.5 x 50 = 8,836 cm³, so 8.84 L, in the 7-9.9 L band. World of Camping prints 52 x 15 cm (9.19 L), the same band.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Pitching*
Estimate: only 2 reviews about pitching (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.
2 reviews on pitching, e.g. "It's extremely easy to get it set up. The pitching time is maybe 5 minutes, maybe 6 minutes".
Condensation*
Estimate: only 1 review about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 4/10How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.
1 review on condensation, e.g. "you will get condensation um that's hard to avoid with the small tents".
Durability*
Estimate: only 2 reviews about durability (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How well the fabric, poles, zips and seams hold up over seasons of use.
2 reviews on durability, e.g. "I have wild camp with a Soul 200 in various conditions and it's held up reasonably well.".
In short
Good for
- One person on a very small budget: woodland camps, festivals and scout camps in dry or showery weather
- A first tent for Duke of Edinburgh and similar groups, where each person carries their own
- Short, sheltered wild camps where weight under 2.3 kg and 9 L packed size matter more than space
Strengths
- 2.26 kg and 8.84 L packed for a 3,000 mm fly, light for the money
- Pitches in about 5-7 minutes on two poles (Vango 7 minutes, both reviewers 5)
- Compression stuff sack praised by Summit Seekers
- Three vents plus a part-mesh inner door
Weaknesses
- A one-person tent sold as two: Camp With Matt and Camping Chris both say two people won't fit, and a person of 1.83 m touches both ends
- Small porch with no groundsheet: room for boots only
- Inner-first pitching wets the inner in rain
- Fibreglass poles and thin shepherd's-hook pegs; reviewers say upgrade the pegs for anything exposed
- Not for mountain tops or storms (Vango and Camp With Matt); condensation in small tents (Badger and the Woodsman)
- Vango gives no season rating: the 3-season figure above is our own assumption, and its reviewers use it for woodland and fair-weather camps
