Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 9/10

How much it adds to your pack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

The burner alone is not ready to cook on, so we count it with a pot support. TOAKS gives 20 g for the burner and 23 g for its wire Stove Frame (sold separately for this stove), 43 g together, under the 60 g line. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists the burner at 18 g and Spiguyver Backpacking gives 24 g; Jake Marcin weighed the burner at 20 g and the 23 g pot stand he used with it. TOAKS's TiStand (stand and windshield in one, 70 g) is a windshield as well, so it is not counted.

Packed size

From maker's figures 8/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 8: Clearly better than most.

TOAKS gives 53 mm across and 40 mm high. Worked as a cylinder 5.3 cm across and 4 cm high: 3.14 x 2.65 x 2.65 x 4 = 88 cm3, about 0.088 L, in the 0.08-0.19 L band (close to the lower line). Without the stand.

Boil speed (still air)

From maker's figures 1/10

How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in still air. Wind slows every stove: see Wind performance. 1: A real weak point.

TOAKS publishes 475 ml of water boiled in 5 min 30 s (indoor test). Scaled to 1 litre by doubling the 0.5 L figure: 11 min 00 s, 660 s, in the 480 s+ band.

Wind performance

Estimate from maker's specs: windshield in the box 3/10

How well it keeps boiling in a breeze, as sold, without an extra windshield. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Estimate from maker's specs

In short

Good for

  • Solo trips and fastpacking where every gram counts: 20 g for the burner
  • Boiling water for hot drinks and dehydrated meals in one small pot
  • Anyone who already has a pot stand and windshield, or will make one from mesh or foil

Strengths

  • 20 g and about 5.3 cm across: one of the lightest and smallest ways to cook
  • Two titanium walls less than 1 mm apart draw fuel up and vaporise it, so it burns clean and quickly. Jake Marcin found it ready within moments of lighting, much faster to get going than a Trangia-style burner
  • Easy to put out and to pour unused fuel back, because the jets sit on the inside (Jake Marcin)
  • TOAKS's indoor test: 30 ml of fuel burns for 11 min 30 s and 475 ml of water boils in 5 min 30 s
  • Spiguyver's controlled tests boiled about 355 ml in 5 min 22 s to 6 min with 30 ml of fuel, and it burned out in about 10 min 45 s

Weaknesses

  • A burner only: TOAKS says the stand in its photos is sold separately, and a pot placed straight on it puts the flame out (Spiguyver Backpacking)
  • The stand Jake Marcin used held the pot about 3.8 cm up; he says another tester found a gap of about 2.5 cm boils faster, and Spiguyver used a gap of about 2.5 cm
  • No flame control and no windscreen in the box
  • Spiguyver found it much louder than other alcohol stoves he tested
  • No independent test says how it copes with wind or simmering, so those two are estimates, not reviewed scores
