Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

From maker's figures 7/10

How well it stops the cold ground chilling you. 7: Better than most.

Maker's R-value of 4.4 sits in the R 4–5.4 band: good for three seasons and mild winter nights. Therm-a-Rest's FAQ on the product page says its R-values use the ASTM F3340-18 standard.

Thickness

From maker's figures 7/10

How deep it is. Deeper is comfier, above all for side sleepers. 7: Better than most.

7.6 cm thick.

Quietness

Estimate from maker's specs: mat type (fewer than 3 reviews about noise) 7/10

How little it crinkles or squeaks when you turn over. 7: Better than most.

No review we found says how noisy it is, so this is an estimate from the mat type.

Weight

From maker's figures 4/10

How much it adds to your pack. 4: A bit below average.

Maker lists 850 g for the Regular, which sits in the 750–999 g band. UK shop pages and T3's scales say 774 g, and Cotswold lists 820 g: all the same band.

Packed size

From maker's figures 1/10

How much room it takes in or on your rucksack. 1: A real weak point.

Packs to 28 x 22 cm (length x width of the roll): 3.1416 x 11 x 11 x 28 = 10,644 cm³, so 10.6 L, in the 7 L+ band.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Comfort*

Reviewers' average 7/10

How comfy it is, including for side sleepers.

4 reviews on comfort, e.g. "there was no denying how plush it felt. [...] However, I really didn’t sleep well on this pad.".

Stability*

Reviewers' average 6/10

How well you stay on it without rolling off or bouncing.

3 reviews on stability, e.g. "every time I changed position, I felt like I was going to tumble off it".

Reviewers disagree on this.

In short

Good for

  • Comfort-first wild camps from spring to autumn, and mild winter nights, when you carry the kit a short way
  • Side sleepers and anyone who wants a mattress-like feel without paying for a thick air mat
  • Car-supported camping, bothy trips and shorter backpacking trips where pack space isn't tight

Strengths

  • Thick 7.6 cm foam core feels very plush and smooths out lumpy ground
  • R 4.4 keeps the cold ground out for three-season use and mild winter nights
  • Soft stretch-knit top fabric feels nice against the skin, and tough 50D top and 75D bottom fabric
  • Self-inflating, so most of the work is done for you, and the big WingLock valve makes topping up easy

Weaknesses

  • Heavy for a backpacking mat: 850 g on the maker's figure, 774 g on a UK shop's and T3's scales (UKC weighed the Wide at just over 1 kg)
  • Bulky when packed (about 10.6 litres), much bigger than an air mat of similar warmth
  • Narrow and a bit wobbly for restless sleepers: one tester felt like rolling off it, though another found it roomy
  • Needs extra breaths to firm up and takes a bit of squeezing to deflate; one reviewer also found the top fabric crinkly while another found it silent
  • A few owners on the maker's own review page report delamination and a stuff sack seam splitting; no independent long-term test found
