Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
From maker's figures 3/10How well it stops the cold ground chilling you. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Therm-a-Rest lists R 2.2 and says its R-values use the ASTM F3340-18 standard: in the R 2–2.9 band, so mild 3-season nights at best. Older listings of an earlier Venture show R 1.8; we use the current figure.
Thickness
From maker's figures 5/10How deep it is. Deeper is comfier, above all for side sleepers. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
5 cm thick.
Quietness
Estimate: only 2 reviews about noise (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How little it crinkles or squeaks when you turn over. 8: Clearly better than most.
Reviewers call the Venture quiet: it doesn't rustle in a tent and is quieter than other NeoAir pads.
Weight
From maker's figures 7/10How much it adds to your pack. 7: Better than most.
Therm-a-Rest's own R-value rankings page lists 0.54 kg for the Regular, and Ellis Brigham agrees. Its older product page said 0.57 kg and Ultralight Outdoor Gear says 555 g: at those figures this would be a 3, as the 550 g line is close.
Packed size
From maker's figures 6/10How much room it takes in or on your rucksack. 6: A bit better than average.
Therm-a-Rest gives 23 x 13 cm and no litres: 3.1416 x 6.5 x 6.5 x 23 = 3,053 cm³, so 3.1 L, in the 2.5–3.9 L band.
In short
Good for
- Late spring to early autumn wild camps on mild nights (R 2.2)
- Budget-minded campers who want a full-size 5 cm air mat from a big brand
- Car-camping-style trips where weight and pack size matter less
Strengths
- Advnture found it a comfortable all-round choice for warmer weather
- Tougher 50D polyester than ultralight mats
Weaknesses
- R 2.2 is for summer and mild nights only
- Heavy for its warmth: 540 g and 3.1 L packed for R 2.2
- Narrow at 51 cm
- Only one independent review of the current version, so comfort and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
