Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 3/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Terra Nova's key details give a trail weight of 2.36 kg (tent body, flysheet and poles) and 2.56 kg in total; its intro text says 2.35 kg minimum. We use the heavier 2.36 kg, in the 2.0–2.69 kg band (both figures are in the same band).
Rain protection
From maker's figures 8/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.
Fly 3,000 mm is in the 3,000 mm+ band (the top band); floor 10,000 mm, so no deduction. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.
Wind
Estimate from maker's specs: maker's season rating (fewer than 3 reviews about wind) 7/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 7: Better than most.
No published review says how it copes with wind, so this is an estimate from the maker's season rating.
Space
From maker's figures 8/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 8: Clearly better than most.
Terra Nova's floor plan prints an inner 230 cm long and 133 cm wide (with 61 cm and 63 cm porches): 2.30 x 1.33 = 3.06 m², divided by 2 people = 1.53 m² each, in the 1.35–1.59 band. The plan draws the inner as a plain rectangle, so the real floor may be a little less. Steven Summits reads out the same figures.
Packed size
From maker's figures 3/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Terra Nova's page prints the packed size as 46 L x 20 W x 20 H cm. No photo we found shows the stuff sack; we treat it as a roll 46 cm long and 20 cm across, as the site draws it and as for other Terra Nova tents: 3.1416 x 10 x 10 x 46 = 14,451 cm³, so 14.45 L, in the 10–14.9 L band. If it were a box (18.4 L) it would be the 1 band.
In short
Good for
- Two people who want a big, strong, freestanding four-season tent for UK mountains and winter camps
- Pairs with two wide mats and kit: Steven Summits says the 133 cm-wide inner has room for two 64 cm mats side by side
Strengths
- Big inner for two: 230 x 133 cm (3.06 m²), 26% larger than the previous Southern Cross 2 (Terra Nova)
- Three doors (two on one side, one on the other), a flexible porch and 36 door and vent set-ups (Terra Nova)
- 3,000 mm fly and 10,000 mm floor, so no weak spot in the waterproofing
- Stronger 9 mm centre pole, and guy lines that hook onto the poles as well as the fabric
- Freestanding, with 14 Terra Firma pegs; a clip-in footprint is available
- Trekking-pole compatible, and PFAS-free, solution-dyed recycled fabrics
Weaknesses
- Heavy for two people at 2.36 kg trail weight, 2.56 kg in total
- Packs to 46 x 20 x 20 cm, so it needs a big rucksack
- Needs a large flat pitch: Steven Summits says the floor space is huge
- Only two poles, so most of its wind strength comes from the guy lines (Steven Summits)
- Terra Nova says 'Pitch Time: >5 min'; Steven Summits needed 6 min 21 s on rough ground
- No independent wind or long-term test of the 2026 tent yet, so wind, pitching and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
