Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 8/10

How much it adds to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.

87 g with the 4Flex pot support (SOTO; Live for the Outdoors also weighed 87 g) sits in the 60-119 g band. Without a pot support it is 60 g.

Packed size

From maker's figures 6/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 6: A bit better than average.

SOTO Japan's page for the same stove (model SOD-310) gives the stove body stowed, without a pot support, as 47 x 51 x 88 mm: 4.7 x 5.1 x 8.8 = 211 cm3, about 0.21 L. The 4Flex support it is sold with is carried separately: SOTO gives it as 47 x 77 x 44 mm (about 0.16 L), so body plus support is about 0.37 L. Both are in the 0.2-0.59 L band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists a deeper 4.7 x 9 x 8.8 cm for the body; OutdoorGearLab's 11.9 x 9.9 x 9.1 cm is the stove set up for use.

Boil speed (still air)

Estimate from maker's specs: burner power figure (no boil time published) 5/10

How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in still air. Wind slows every stove: see Wind performance. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Wind performance

From reviews 8/10

How well it keeps boiling in a breeze, as sold, without an extra windshield. 8: Clearly better than most.

Live for the Outdoors boiled 500 ml in 2 min 30 s in a breeze of about 10 km/h and found it very hard to blow out (5); OutdoorGearLab rates wind resistance 7.9 out of 10 (4), with about 15% worse fuel use in fan tests but much slower boils at exposed camps; Bikepacking.com says the wind-resistant burner design works really well, but did not time it (4); PaleoHikerMD does not give the wind speed of its fan, so its times (2 cups in 2 min 5 s still and 4 min 19 s in wind) are not banded; it says the stove clearly beats the Amicus in wind (4). None used the 3-6 km/h reference breeze. Average 4.2 out of 5, so 8 out of 10.

In short

Good for

  • UK wild campers who want one top-mount stove that copes with breeze and cooks real food
  • Cold nights and mild shoulder-season trips, where the regulator keeps output steadier than an unregulated stove
  • Solo trips and trips for two with pots up to about 2 litres on the wide 4Flex support

Strengths

  • Strong wind performance for a top-mount stove: dished burner head with a lip, and the pot sits very close to the flame
  • Micro regulator keeps output steadier as the canister empties and in cooler weather; push-start igniter built in
  • 87 g with a 3,260 W burner; two cups in 2 min 5 s in still air (PaleoHikerMD) and 500 ml in 2 min 27 s to 2 min 30 s in the two hands-on tests that timed it
  • Large four-armed 4Flex support (about 14 cm across); Bikepacking.com found it held heavy loads with no flex
  • Excellent simmering across four reviews; stuff sack in the box

Weaknesses

  • The 4Flex pot support comes off and is a separate part to fit and keep; OutdoorGearLab found it fiddly to put back on if it drops off
  • Tall stove: Live for the Outdoors found it slightly top-heavy, and it does not nest in the smallest pots
  • PaleoHikerMD's wind test took 107% longer (2 min 5 s still, 4 min 19 s windy for 2 cups; wind speed not stated, so not scored from the times)
  • Igniter took a second press in cold, damp air (Bikepacking.com); carry a lighter
  • Pot sits only 9 mm above the burner, so thin pots scorch if you walk away; SOTO publishes no 1-litre boil time
  • Regulated, but SOTO gives no winter rating, so we do not mark it winter-ready
