Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 4/10

How much it adds to your pack. 4: A bit below average.

SOTO gives 182 g, stove only (the pouch is extra), on its US page and on SOTO Japan's page: in the 180-299 g band, only just. Trekitt lists 179 g (a shop figure, which would be band 3); we band SOTO's. SOTO Japan's current model (SOD-331) has a single-jet 3.5 kW burner where the US page and UK shops quote 3,260 W (SOD-330); weight and stowed size are the same.

Packed size

From maker's figures 4/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 4: A bit below average.

SOTO gives 11 x 6 x 10 cm stowed (SOTO Japan: 110 x 60 x 100 mm): 11 x 6 x 10 = 660 cm3, about 0.66 L, in the 0.6-1.59 L band. Trekitt lists 15 x 10 x 6 cm (0.9 L, a shop figure), the same band.

Boil speed (still air)

Estimate from maker's specs: burner power figure (no boil time published) 5/10

How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in still air. Wind slows every stove: see Wind performance. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Wind performance

From reviews 7/10

How well it keeps boiling in a breeze, as sold, without an extra windshield. 7: Better than most.

The Great Outdoors calls the burner very wind-resistant, adding that a short windshield can still help in harder weather (4); Paul Messner says the lip round the burner and the low pot height protect the flame, and that on the same calm day he would still want a windshield on his MSR WindPro 2 and Kovea Spider, but he did not time it in wind (4); TheOutdoorGearReview says the built-in shield works okay but you will definitely need a wind block (3). None timed it in the 3-6 km/h reference breeze. Average 3.7 out of 5, so 7 out of 10.

In short

Good for

  • Cooking real meals, not just boiling water: simmering porridge, sauces and pasta on a stove that sits low and steady
  • Windy UK hills and shoulder-season trips, where the dished burner and regulator keep the flame going
  • Two or more people sharing a stove, with pots from a small mug up to a large pan

Strengths

  • Strong wind performance for a remote stove: concave burner head with about 300 short flames, and the pot sits low
  • Best simmer control reviewers had used: Paul Messner cooked porridge, omelettes and pancakes on it; The Great Outdoors says it simmers very effectively
  • Very stable: three legs that double as pot supports, 16 cm across (SOTO Japan); The Great Outdoors rates the leg design the best in its test
  • Micro regulator holds output as the canister cools or empties; The Great Outdoors got a usable, consistent flame right to the end of a canister
  • 3,260 W; TheOutdoorGearReview boiled about 470 ml in 2 min 55 s in still air
  • The control knob is on the hose, so you can turn it down away from the flame

Weaknesses

  • Heavy and bulky for a stove: 182 g and about 0.66 L stowed, overkill if you only boil water (The Great Outdoors, Ultralight Outdoor Gear)
  • No built-in igniter: carry a lighter (SOTO, TheOutdoorGearReview)
  • SOTO publishes no 1-litre boil time and gives no temperature rating. Its US page says the regulator keeps a strong flame in cold temperatures, and SOTO Japan lists winter camping among its uses and says the regulator keeps output steady at low temperature; we mark it winter-ready from those words, not from any reviewer
  • Output is quoted two ways: 3,260 W on SOTO's US page and UK shops, 3.5 kW for the current model on SOTO Japan's page
