Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 8/10

How much it adds to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.

75 g (SOTO, without igniter) sits in the 60-119 g band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 70 g without the bag.

Packed size

From maker's figures 8/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 8: Clearly better than most.

SOTO gives 4.3 x 4.0 x 7.5 cm stowed: 4.3 x 4.0 x 7.5 = 129 cm3, about 0.13 L, in the 0.08-0.19 L band.

Boil speed (still air)

Estimate from maker's specs: burner power figure (no boil time published) 5/10

How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in still air. Wind slows every stove: see Wind performance. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Wind performance

From reviews 5/10

How well it keeps boiling in a breeze, as sold, without an extra windshield. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

OutdoorGearLab found its small exposed burner head blew out in moderate to strong gusts; PaleoHikerMD timed 2 cups at 2 min 37 s still and 5 min 41 s in wind (117% longer, 2 on our table); SectionHiker liked the recessed burner head but did not time it. None used the 3-6 km/h reference breeze.

Reviewers disagree on this.

In short

Good for

  • Budget three-season stove for one or two people with a small to medium pot
  • Walkers who want to simmer as well as boil without paying for a regulated stove
  • Summer and mild-weather wild camps in sheltered spots, with a windscreen if it blows

Strengths

  • 75 g and about 0.13 L stowed
  • Four spring-loaded pot supports that lock in place and take pots from 4.2 to 11 cm wide at the base
  • Reviewers praise its simmer control and the long valve handle that stays away from the flame
  • Triple O-ring valve seal

Weaknesses

  • OutdoorGearLab says it blew out in moderate to strong gusts, and PaleoHikerMD timed it 117% slower in wind (2 cups, 2 min 37 s still, 5 min 41 s windy); SOTO says the recessed burner helps in wind, but only SectionHiker agrees
  • No regulator: power falls in the cold or as the canister empties, so it is not a winter stove
  • SOTO publishes no 1-litre boil time, so boil speed is an estimate, not a reviewed score
  • Most reviewers tested the igniter version; the burner is the same
