Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Brightness
From maker's figures 7/10How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 7: Better than most.
500 lumens in Max mode (1.5-3 hours with the Hybrid battery), in the 500-799 band. Silva's page says its lumen values are measured 30 seconds after switching on to ANSI FL1. With AAA cells the maximum is 450 lumens.
Runtime
From maker's figures 5/10How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Silva gives the 200-lumen Med mode as a range, 4.5-8 hours, with no battery named, and its own page lists the Med mode as 200 lumens in the feature list but 250 in the spec table. We use the cautious end, 4.5 hours, in the 4-5.9 h band (8 hours would be band 4), because the figures disagree. The Max mode lasts 1.5-3 hours; Tea & Trails measured 2 hours at 500 lumens on the Hybrid battery, inside Silva's range. The 50-lumen Min mode is under 80 lumens, so it doesn't count.
Weight
From maker's figures 4/10How much it adds to your pack and your head. 4: A bit below average.
Silva lists 113 g with the Hybrid battery and battery case (60 g for the lamp and headband alone), in the 110-149 g band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear's table says 132 g, which Silva's pages don't support.
In short
Good for
- Night running and fast hiking where a cord-free headband keeps weight off your forehead
- Anyone who wants a rechargeable battery with an AAA backup in the same case
- Runners who want a red rear light in the battery case
Strengths
- 500 lumens, measured to ANSI FL1 according to Silva
- Battery case holds the rechargeable Hybrid battery or 3 AAA cells, and it can ride in a pocket on the flat cord
- Silva's Free design runs the power cord inside the headband, so nothing dangles
- Red rear safety light in the battery case
- IPX5 headlamp and battery; 5-year warranty (2 years on the battery)
Weaknesses
- 113 g in all, in the 110-149 g band, with a battery at the back
- Max mode lasts only 1.5-3 hours
- IPX5 only: it handles rain but is not rated for being dipped in water
- No red light at the front (the red light is the rear safety light), unlike the Explore 5 and Smini
- Comfort and beam are estimates, not reviewed scores: only one independent review found of this version
