Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Protection
From maker's figures 6/10What it removes from water, and how well that is proved. 6: A bit better than average.
0.1 µm hollow-fibre membrane. Sawyer claims 99.99999% of bacteria and 99.9999% of protozoa and says this exceeds EPA recommendations, but names no standard and links no test report for the Micro Squeeze. Its published reports cover the Mini (USEPA 1987 protocol) and the full-size Squeeze (NSF P231), not this filter, so the Micro is claimed with no published test: 3. No virus claim.
Flow rate
Estimate from maker's specs: filter type (no flow rate published) 5/10How fast clean water comes through when it is new. Real flow drops as it clogs: see Ease of use. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Weight
From maker's figures 8/10How much it adds to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.
Sawyer says the kit weighs under 113 g, and Adventure Alan's comparison table lists this exact kit, the Micro with its 750 ml Cnoc pouch, at 96 g: 90–149 g. Ultralight Outdoor Gear heads its page 87 g, which would be the under 90 g band, but the specification table on that page is headed for the Cnoc 1 L bottle kit, so we take the figure that names this kit. The 145 g on Sawyer Europe's page is a shipping weight.
Ease of use
From reviews 7/10Filling, squeezing or pumping effort, how fast it clogs in peaty or silty water, and how easy it is to clean. 7: Better than most.
Easy to set up, but the small filter clogs sooner. Oscar Hikes (nine months) and Campology rate it simple and effective; Jeremiah Stringer's flow dropped after a week on a three-week trail despite daily backflushing, and Adventure Alan calls the Micro slower and more clog-prone than the Squeeze and finds the 750 ml pouch too tall with the filter on. Two score 4 and two score 3: average 3.5 out of 5, so 7 out of 10. These reviews cover the Micro filter; Adventure Alan is the only one to test it with the Cnoc Hydriam 750 ml.
In short
Good for
- Ultralight trips where every gram counts
- A small second filter on a long walk
- Drinking from a soft flask and filtering into a cooking pot
- Use with any 28 mm thread bottle
Strengths
- About 96 g for filter and 750 ml pouch
- Rated to 378,541 L
- Backflushable with the included plunger and coupling
- Threaded at both ends, so it fits bottles and in-line hoses
- The Cnoc TPU pouch is tougher than Sawyer's old pouches
Weaknesses
- Slower and clogs sooner than the full-size Squeeze (Adventure Alan, Jeremiah Stringer)
- Sawyer publishes no flow rate and no test report for this model
- With the filter on, the 750 ml pouch is 37 cm tall, awkward in a pocket (Adventure Alan)
- Does not remove viruses
- Not safe after freezing: Sawyer says to replace a filter you think froze, with no warranty
