Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 8/10How much it adds to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.
Rab gives 406 g, in the 400–599 g band. Live for the Outdoors weighed 450 g with its 15 g stuff bag, in the same band.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 7/10How well the fabric keeps out heavy, long rain. 7: Better than most.
Rab gives 10,000 mm hydrostatic head for the 40D PU-coated nylon top and 10,000 mm for the base, in the 10,000–14,999 mm band. The floor is over the 2,000 mm line, so nothing is taken off. The snap-fastened opening cannot be fully sealed (see weaknesses).
Packed size
From maker's figures 9/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Rab gives 18 cm x 12 cm: 3.1416 x 6 x 6 x 18 = 2,036 cm³, about 2.0 L, under the 2.5 L line. Live for the Outdoors measured 20 x 12 cm, about 2.3 L, also under the line.
In short
Good for
- Dry or lightly showery summer nights in the open, to keep dew and spray off a sleeping bag
- A cheap, light extra layer under a tarp on backpacking or bikepacking trips
- Emergency shelter that packs to about 2 L
Strengths
- Light at 406 g and packs to about 2.0 L (18 x 12 cm)
- Long and wide: 250 cm by 85 cm at the shoulders, with room for a mat, bag and a small pack (Live for the Outdoors)
- 10,000 mm hydrostatic head on both the top and the base, with taped seams
- Snap opening with a stiffened peak and rain gutter, so it feels less shut in than a zip-up bag
Weaknesses
- The snap opening cannot be sealed: there are small gaps between the snaps, so heavy rain needs a tarp (Live for the Outdoors)
- No pole, so the fabric rests on your face in prolonged rain (Outdoors Magic)
- Heavier on reviewers' scales than Rab says: 450 g with its stuff bag (Live for the Outdoors)
- Condensation and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores: only one reviewer judges each
