Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 5/10How much it adds to your pack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Rab gives 890 g, in the 600–899 g band. UKClimbing weighed 912 g with pegs, pole, guylines and stuff sacks and Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 906 g without the bag; those would be in the 900–1,099 g band, so the real weight sits close to the line.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 9/10How well the fabric keeps out heavy, long rain. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Rab gives 15,000 mm hydrostatic head for the 15D Pertex Shield Air upper, in the 15,000 mm+ band. Rab lists its 40D ripstop nylon 'Lining' at 10,000 mm and describes a bathtub base with taped seams; UKClimbing calls that 40D ripstop the groundsheet, so the floor is 10,000 mm, over the 2,000 mm line, and nothing is taken off.
Packed size
From maker's figures 5/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Rab gives 32 cm x 15 cm: 3.1416 x 7.5 x 7.5 x 32 = 5,655 cm³, about 5.7 L, in the 4–5.9 L band. It includes the pole and nine pegs.
In short
Good for
- Solo backpacking, bikepacking and mountain-marathon trips where you want shelter without carrying a tent
- Exposed ridges and tight pitches: low profile, 9 peg and guy points
- Midge season in the Scottish hills: the zipped door has an integral mosquito mesh door
- Winter nights: the small space warms up quickly, as reviewers noted
Strengths
- Roomy for a bivvy: 240 cm long, 80 cm across the shoulders and 60 cm headroom under the hoop
- 15,000 mm upper with a bathtub base, and Pertex Shield Air breathable fabric (Rab's figure 20,000 g/m²/24 h)
- Freestanding with a DAC hoop at the head and a short pole at the foot: pitches in about 2 minutes (UKClimbing)
- Includes 9 DAC V-stakes and 3 guylines, so it can be pegged out like a tent
- Built with robust fabrics and well-finished seams (UKClimbing, OUTDOOR magazin)
Weaknesses
- Heavy for a hooped bivvy at 890 g (Rab), and 912 g on UKClimbing's scales with pegs, pole, guylines and stuff sacks
- Getting in and out takes contortions and is awkward in rain (UKClimbing)
- The pole fits tightly: UKClimbing snapped one forcing it into the second eyelet
- Water can drip in through the open entrance in rain (OUTDOOR magazin); leave the zip open a little for air
- Condensation is an estimate, not a reviewed score: only two independent sources judge the current bag
