Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
From reviews 7/10How warm it keeps you standing still at camp. 7: Better than most.
Three independent hands-on write-ups of this 313 g version. Switchback Travel (4) wore it ski touring at about -10 °C under a shell and in bitter wind during a snow-pit dig, and found it much warmer than the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer. Hiking Trails (4) tested it on Grossglockner and other high-altitude climbs and called the warmth exceptional in freezing wind and fog near the summit. The Big Outside (3) kept warm on mornings around freezing over two light base layers, adding a thin fleece below about 4 °C. Average 3.7 out of 5, so 7 out of 10.
Weight
From maker's figures 9/10How much it adds to your pack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Rab lists 313 g for size M, in the under 350 g band (37 g under the 350 g edge).
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Damp weather*
Estimate: only 2 reviews about damp weather (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 7/10How well it stays warm when damp or in drizzle.
2 reviews on damp weather, e.g. "I wouldn’t trust it in sustained rain or wet snow without a shell".
Fit*
Reviewers' average 7/10How well it fits and moves, over and under other layers.
6 reviews on fit, e.g. "quite form-fitting, especially in the torso".
In short
Good for
- Cold, dry mountain days, ski touring and winter climbing, worn under a shell
- A very light, warm layer for cold stops and winter camps when weight matters
- Mountaineering, with a slim, articulated cut that moves with a harness and rucksack
Strengths
- 313 g for size M, in the under 350 g band, with 140 g of 900 fill power goose down
- Nikwax hydrophobic down for some protection if it gets damp
- Down-filled hood with a stiffened peak, and articulated sleeves
- Stitch-through build with square baffles around the core and regular ones on the sleeves for movement
- Switchback Travel found it warmer than the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer and durable over a full season
Weaknesses
- Damp performance and durability aren't scored: only a few independent hands-on write-ups of this exact jacket found
- No packed size or volume published, only the descriptions 'a small camping pillow' and 'a large grapefruit' from reviewers
- Slim fit leaves little room for layers underneath; no chest or internal pocket and no hood drawcord
- 10D outer needs care around rock and thorns; the DWR only sheds light rain and snow
