Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
From reviews 6/10How warm it keeps you standing still at camp. 6: A bit better than average.
Three reviewers rate it a mild-weather layer. Walkhighlands found a good degree of warmth and called it a year-round layer (3); Better Trail found average warmth for a synthetic, best for mild shoulder-season days and underpowered standing still below about 7 °C, and printed 3/5 for warmth (3); Road Trail Run, who were sent samples, found the warmth good for moving in temperatures of about -13 to -7 °C but say nothing about wearing it standing still (3). Average 3 out of 5, so 6 out of 10. The reviewers agree the fleece side panels cost some warmth and wind resistance.
Weight
From maker's figures 7/10How much it adds to your pack. 7: Better than most.
Rab publishes 446 g for the men's medium, in the 350-449 g band. Road Trail Run give the same 446 g.
In short
Good for
- Mild shoulder-season days and camp evenings as a light synthetic layer
- Stop-and-go hiking where the fleece side panels help ventilation
- Light travel and everyday use
Strengths
- 446 g in size M with 157 g of recycled PrimaLoft Silver RISE insulation
- Stretch fleece side panels give freedom of movement and ventilation (Walkhighlands, Better Trail, Road Trail Run)
- Synthetic fill that does not depend on a water-repellent treatment, as down does
- Packs into its own hand pocket; two zipped hand pockets and two inside drop-in pockets
Weaknesses
- Fleece side panels let wind through and cut warmth (Better Trail)
- Shell soaked through after a few minutes of drizzle in one review, so keep it under a waterproof in steady rain
- Slim fit: Rab's fit guide says slim and Better Trail advises sizing up (Road Trail Run found a medium fitted well)
- No packed size published
- Heavier and bulkier than many synthetic jackets in its class (Better Trail)
- Damp performance is an estimate, not a reviewed score: only one review of this version covers it
