Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: heavy fleece 5/10How warm they keep your hands at camp and on the move. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Estimate from maker's specs
Weight
From maker's figures 5/10How much they add to your pack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
174 g for the pair, Rab's figure for the current Baltoro (Cotswold and Outside repeat it): the 110-179 g band, near the top of it. The older Baltoro listed at 155 g is a different design.
Waterproofing
From maker's figures 4/10How well they keep your hands dry and the wind out, from how they are made. 4: A bit below average.
Rab describes the outer as Matrix double-weave softshell with a fluorocarbon-free water-repellent finish (DWR) and sells the glove for 'cold, dry conditions'. Rab's page never says windproof (only its page summary calls it 'wind-resistant'), so the 'windproof softshell' band isn't supported: a water-repellent finish only. Rab makes no waterproof claim, and Cotswold's 'waterproof' tag is the shop's, not Rab's.
In short
Good for
- Cold, dry days on the hill and winter walking where you need warmth and grip on poles or an axe
- Climbing, belaying and ski touring: Rab designs it for cold, dry mountain use
- Handling rope and kit with gloves on: leather palm and pre-curved fingers
Strengths
- 60 g/m² PrimaLoft Gold on the back of the hand and a high-loft pile lining for warmth
- Goat leather palm for grip
- Matrix softshell outer with a PFAS-free water-repellent finish
- Dual pull-cord adjustment at the wrist and a pre-curved 3D shape
Weaknesses
- Rab says it is built for cold, dry conditions: a water-repellent finish only, with no windproof or waterproof claim
- At 174 g it sits at the heavy end of the 110-179 g weight band
- No touchscreen claim on Rab's page
- Online reviews are of the older Baltoro, so our judgement scores are blank: no independent test of this version
