Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 7/10

How much they add to your pack. 7: Better than most.

Decathlon lists 270 g in size L, in the 220-289 g band 4. The size M weight isn't published, so M may be lighter.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 3/10

How well the fabric and seams keep out heavy, long rain, when new. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Decathlon rates the coating at 5,000 mm (Schmerber, JIS 1092), band 2, and says 'main taped seams', which we read as critical seams only. Taped at the critical seams only caps rain protection at 2, and 5,000 mm is also band 2, so it is the 2 band.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Breathability*

Estimate: only 1 review about breathability (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 4/10

How dry they keep you from sweat on the move, uphill.

1 review on breathability, e.g. "Tested few times in rain, material not breathable and you sweating inside.".

On and off*

Estimate: only 1 review about on and off (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How easily they go on and off over boots.

1 review on on and off, e.g. "Good for putting on without removing boots".

In short

Good for

  • A spare, packable rain layer in a day bag or the car
  • Short dog walks and lowland walks in light rain (Decathlon: designed for 2-hour hikes at up to 5 km/h)

Strengths

  • 270 g in size L, folding small
  • Ankle zips to put them on over shoes, and a waist drawcord
  • Two pockets; sizes XS to 3XL
  • Decathlon's 2-year warranty

Weaknesses

  • 5,000 mm is the lowest waterproof band; Decathlon describes it for light rain
  • Seams are taped only at the main points
  • Ankle zips only, no longer leg zips
  • Decathlon says they are not recommended for intense exercise; breathability is 5,000 g/m2/24h
  • Weight is for size L; size M isn't published
  • No independent review found, so fit and durability aren't scored
