Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 2/10

How much it adds to your pack. 2: A weak point.

Primus gives 230 g for the stove (its specification table) and 100 g for the ErgoPump that comes with it. Primus does not say that 230 g includes the pump, and independent weighings say it does not: Peak Mountaineering found 224 g for the burner and fuel line and 113 g for the pump, and UKClimbing weighed the stove at 210 g. The method counts the pump on a liquid-fuel stove, so 230 g + 100 g = 330 g, in the 300 g and over band (OutdoorGearLab's trail weight, 326 g, and Alpinetrek's 340 g agree). The fuel bottle is sold separately.

Packed size

From maker's figures 5/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Primus gives 114 x 55 x 90 mm (depth x width x height), worked as a box: 11.4 x 5.5 x 9.0 = 564 cm3, 0.564 L, in the 0.2-0.59 L band, 0.036 L under the 0.6 L line.

Boil speed (still air)

From maker's figures 7/10

How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in still air. Wind slows every stove: see Wind performance. 7: Better than most.

Primus's specification table gives 3 min 40 s for 1 litre in a regular pot (2 min 40 s in its PrimeTech heat-exchanger pot), and its UK page says "under four minutes". We use the slower regular-pot time, 220 s, in the 190-229 s band.

Wind performance

Estimate from maker's specs: windshield in the box 5/10

How well it keeps boiling in a breeze, as sold, without an extra windshield. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Estimate from maker's specs

In short

Good for

  • Winter and high-altitude trips: it burns liquid fuel (white gas, petrol, kerosene) or gas from a canister, and Primus sells it as an expedition stove
  • Long trips where you refill from a pump or fuel station and do not rely on canisters
  • Exposed camps, as the windscreen and heat reflector come in the box

Strengths

  • 230 g for the stove (330 g with its ErgoPump): Primus's lightest multi-fuel stove
  • Burns liquid fuel or canister gas, so one stove covers different trips
  • Titanium legs and pot supports keep the weight down (Primus)
  • Oversized control knob for flame adjustment, from a fine simmer to melting snow (Primus's claim; no review of the current stove to back it)
  • Windscreen and heat reflector are in the box

Weaknesses

  • Needs priming and a pump, and the jet needs cleaning now and then: more to do than a canister stove
  • Packs to about 0.56 L, much larger than a canister-top stove
  • No review of the current stove, so wind and control are estimates, not reviewed scores: the 2012-2019 reviews are of earlier builds
  • 330 g with the pump, in the same heavy band as the other liquid-fuel stoves
