Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 2/10

How much it adds to your pack. 2: A weak point.

Primus gives a product weight of 350 g for the stove as sold (part P328989, which comes with its ErgoPump, multitool, windscreen, heat reflector and bag). Primus does not say exactly what the 350 g covers; Alpinetrek lists 375 g for the burner, fuel line, ErgoPump, windscreen and pouch, and Primus's shop data shows 375 g as the shipping weight. Every reading is in the 300 g and over band, even the burner alone at 350 g.

Packed size

From maker's figures 4/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 4: A bit below average.

Primus's specification table gives 142 x 66 x 88 mm (depth x width x height), worked as a box: 14.2 x 8.8 x 6.6 = 825 cm3, 0.825 L, in the 0.6-1.59 L band.

Boil speed (still air)

From maker's figures 8/10

How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in still air. Wind slows every stove: see Wind performance. 8: Clearly better than most.

Primus's specification table gives 3 min 10 s (190 s) for 1 litre in a regular pot and 2 min in its PrimeTech heat-exchanger pot; its UK page says "just over three minutes". We use 190 s, in the 190-229 s band, right on its lower edge (under 190 s would be band 5).

Wind performance

Estimate from maker's specs: windshield in the box 5/10

How well it keeps boiling in a breeze, as sold, without an extra windshield. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Estimate from maker's specs

In short

Good for

  • Winter and high-altitude trips: it burns liquid fuel (white gas, petrol, kerosene) or gas from a canister, and Primus sells it as an expedition stove for extreme cold and altitude
  • Long trips where you refill from a pump or fuel station and do not rely on canisters
  • Exposed camps, as the windscreen and heat reflector come in the box

Strengths

  • Burns liquid fuel or canister gas, so one stove covers different trips
  • Windscreen, heat reflector, multitool and spare jets come in the box
  • 3000 W and a 190 s boil for 1 litre in a regular pot, quick for a liquid-fuel stove
  • Some Camping Stoves (2015) calls its simmering amazing

Weaknesses

  • 350 g and about 0.83 L packed, heavy and bulky next to a canister stove
  • Needs priming and a pump, and the jet needs cleaning now and then
  • Not enough reviews of this version to score wind or control
