Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 4/10How much it adds to your pack. 4: A bit below average.
Primus's international page gives 195 g (its UK page gives none). Outdoor Ukraine weighed 240 g on a unit bought around 2003-04, which may not match today's. Both are in the 180-299 g band.
Packed size
From maker's figures 3/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Primus's international page lists the stove as diameter 123 mm, height 104 mm and width and depth 125 mm (its UK page gives none). It does not fold, so we work it as a roll, diameter 12.3 cm by height 10.4 cm: 3.14 x 6.15 x 6.15 x 10.4 = 1,236 cm3, about 1.24 L, in the 0.6-1.59 L band. As a box of 12.5 x 12.5 x 10.4 cm it would be 1.63 L, just over the 1.6 L line.
Boil speed (still air)
Estimate from maker's specs: boil time figure 7/10How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in still air. Wind slows every stove: see Wind performance. 7: Better than most.

In short
Good for
- Cooking for one to three people with a frying pan or a large pot
- Car camping and short trips where weight does not matter
Strengths
- Wide flame suits big pots and frying pans (Primus; Outdoor Ukraine)
- Nothing folds, so there is nothing to break or snag; Primus has made it for over 40 years
- Primus rates it at 2,800 W and gives 3 min 30 s for a boil; Outdoor Ukraine timed 1 litre in 4 min 20 s using 20 g of gas, and found it quiet, with a calm, even flame
Weaknesses
- Heavy for a backpacking stove: 195 g (Primus), 240 g on Outdoor Ukraine's scales
- Does not fold, so it packs at about 1.2 L; the carry bag is tight (Outdoor Ukraine)
- No igniter, no regulator, and not for winter use
- Tall and top-heavy on a canister; the shallow pot supports let a rounded pot rock (Outdoor Ukraine)
- The plastic valve handle is short, so it is awkward to adjust under a large pot (Outdoor Ukraine)
- Slower than Primus's figure in the one hands-on test: Outdoor Ukraine got 4 min 20 s for 1 litre against 3 min 30 s
