Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Brightness

From maker's figures 5/10

How much light it gives at full power, for finding your way in the dark. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Petzl states 300 lumens to ANSI/PLATO FL1 with the three AAA it comes with: the 300–499 band.

Runtime

From maker's figures 9/10

How long one charge or set of batteries lasts at a level you can walk and cook by. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

The 100-lumen standard mode runs 10 hours on the included AAA (FL1), in the 10 h+ band. The 300-lumen top mode lasts 2.5 hours.

Weight

From maker's figures 6/10

92 g with the three AAA, in the 90–109 g band.

In short

Good for

  • A cheap spare or backup head torch for camp and short night walks
  • Reading, cooking and moving round a wild camp
  • Anyone who wants the simplest possible lamp: one button, three levels

Strengths

  • 100 lumens for 10 hours and 7 lumens for 100 hours on the AAA it comes with
  • Hybrid: takes the CORE rechargeable battery later (sold separately)
  • A single button and nothing to learn
  • 92 g and a washable band that fits over a hat or helmet

Weaknesses

  • No lock on the button, so it can switch on in a pack
  • IPX4 only (splash-proof)
  • Flood beam only with a 65 m reach: weak for night navigation on open ground
  • CleverHiker found the frame digs into the forehead after a couple of hours without a hat
  • No battery indicator (The Great Outdoors, BASE)
