Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Waterproof build

From maker's figures 8/10

How well its build keeps water out, from the published seams, closure and submersion claim. 8: Clearly better than most.

Ortlieb says it permanently welds all seams, and the bag has a roll-top closure. It is rated IP64 (dust-tight and splash-proof from all directions), with no submersion claim: the 4 band (welded seams and a roll-top).

Weight for its size

From maker's figures 8/10

How much it adds to your pack for the space it protects. 8: Clearly better than most.

104 g for 22 L is 4.7 g/L, in the 4.0–5.9 g/L band (Ortlieb UK's spec table for the 22 L size; Military Kit's size table gives the same 104 g).

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Durability*

Reviewers' average 9/10

How well the fabric and seams resist scuffs and holes.

3 reviews on durability, e.g. "I’ve noticed no wear whatsoever despite a few months of deliberately cavalier use in and out of my pack.".

Ease of use*

Reviewers' average 7/10

How easily it closes, seals and packs.

4 reviews on ease of use, e.g. "The stiffened rolltop buckle closure is easy to use, and creates a reliably watertight seal with just a few turns.".

In short

Good for

  • Lining a day pack or a rucksack so a sleeping bag, a down jacket or spare clothes stay dry in rain
  • A tidy way to sort kit inside a pack: 22 L is big enough for a sleeping bag or a stack of clothes
  • Light enough to carry one or two for a long walk
  • Not for river crossings or anything that may go under water

Strengths

  • Welded seams and a roll-top closure
  • 104 g for 22 L (4.7 g/L)
  • Plain bag with no valve: nothing extra to fail (UKHillwalking prefers it to the valve version), and 4 g lighter than the Light Valve
  • A reinforced base panel and a grab loop (UKHillwalking, 2022)
  • Made in Germany, 5-year warranty, and Ortlieb can reweld holes

Weaknesses

  • IP64 means splash proof, not submersible
  • Ortlieb says the roll-top must be rolled 3 to 4 times and secured downward to reach IP64
  • Ortlieb says it is not suitable for storing food or drinking water, and shouldn't be stored rolled up
  • Ortlieb's own site shows only 8 reviews, and the independent write-up found doesn't cover wear over time, so durability and ease are estimates, not reviewed scores
