Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Waterproof build
From maker's figures 8/10How well its build keeps water out, from the published seams, closure and submersion claim. 8: Clearly better than most.
Ortlieb says it permanently welds all seams, and the bag has a roll-top closure with a stiffener bar. It is rated IP64 (dust-tight and splash-proof from all directions), with no submersion claim: the 4 band (welded seams and a roll-top).
Weight for its size
From maker's figures 2/10How much it adds to your pack for the space it protects. 2: A weak point.
290 g for 22 L is 13.2 g/L, over 12.0 g/L: the 1 band (Ortlieb UK's spec table for the 22 L size; SJS Cycles gives the same 290 g, Military Kit's size table says 280 g). This PVC-coated polyester is built for toughness, not weight.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Durability*
Reviewers' average 9/10How well the fabric and seams resist scuffs and holes.
3 reviews on durability, e.g. "in our tests the fabric held up nicely to being dragged repeatedly across sticks and rocks, as well as across my asphalt driveway.".
Ease of use*
Estimate: only 2 reviews about ease of use (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 7/10How easily it closes, seals and packs.
2 reviews on ease of use, e.g. "In our tests there was no fighting against thick or sticky fabric, or any second-guessing as to how securely the bag was closed.".
In short
Good for
- A sturdier rucksack liner than the Light: PVC-coated polyester with a reinforced base
- Camping, boating and everyday outdoor use, which is how Ortlieb describes it
- A sleeping bag or clothes liner: Ortlieb says 12 to 22 L is the all-round size for clothing or a sleeping bag
- Sizes from 5 L to 109 L
- Not for river crossings or anything that may go under water
Strengths
- Welded seams and a roll-top closure with a stiffener bar
- PVC-coated polyester (PD350): a heavier fabric than the Light's PU-coated nylon
- Reinforced base for stability and easier loading
- 5-year warranty, and Ortlieb can reweld holes
- Made in Germany
Weaknesses
- 290 g for 22 L is 13.2 g/L, so it scores low for weight for its size: 186 g more than the Dry-Bag Light 22 L
- IP64 means splash proof, not submersible
- Ortlieb says the roll-top must be rolled 3 to 4 times and secured downward to reach IP64
- Ortlieb says it is not suitable for storing food or drinking water, and shouldn't be stored rolled up
- No independent tests found, so durability and ease are estimates, not reviewed scores
