Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 2/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 2: A weak point.
OEX's listed weight of 2.84 kg (it does not say whether this is packed or minimum) is in the 2.7 kg+ band.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 8/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.
Fly 5,000 mm is the 3,000+ band (the top band) and the floor is 4,000 mm, over 2,000 mm, so no point is taken off. The maker's figure, not re-tested. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.
Wind
Estimate from maker's specs: maker's season rating (fewer than 3 reviews about wind) 5/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
No published review says how it copes with wind, so this is an estimate from the maker's season rating.
Space
Estimate from maker's specs: berths and tent shape (no floor area published) 5/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Estimate from maker's specs
Packed size
From maker's figures 3/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
No litres published. 52 x 22 x 13 cm is a box of 52 x 22 x 13 = 14,872 cm3, so about 14.9 L, in the 10-14.9 L band.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Pitching*
Reviewers' average 7/10How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.
3 reviews on pitching, e.g. "Easy to pitch up, I think, cuz maybe 6-7 minutes.".
In short
Good for
- Two people wanting a cheap, waterproof dome for short UK trips where weight is not a worry
- Wet weather: fly 5,000 mm and floor 4,000 mm
Strengths
- Fly 5,000 mm and floor 4,000 mm, the top rain band for the fly
- Two entrances, internal storage pockets and lantern hanging points
- Aluminium Endura poles (8.5 mm)
Weaknesses
- 2.84 kg and about 14.9 L packed is heavy and bulky for backpacking
- No inner floor size published, so space is an estimate, not a reviewed score
- Pitching scores 6 from four reviews
- The shop copy is muddled: it says the tent fits three people and mentions the Rakoon III, though it is named Rakoon II and filed under 1-2 person tents, so we list it as a two-berth
- Tiso sells a Rakoon 2.1 (2.76 kg) which looks like a close relative, not the same listing
- OEX gives no season rating; we list it as three-season, the cautious choice
- OEX is GO Outdoors' own brand, sold only through GO Outdoors, Blacks and Millets
- Andras bent a pole on a mountain top in wind of about 50 to 70 km/h and found the door clip opens in wind; Mr. Wild Wales found the porch small and the roof low
