Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 6/10How much it adds to your pack. 6: A bit better than average.
OEX gives 370 g for the set and does not list what is weighed (the set is stove, pot, lid and sleeve). It is the same on the Tiso, Millets, Blacks and GO Outdoors pages. Countryfile gives the same. In the 350-449 g band.
Fuel use
From maker's figures 8/10How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 8: Clearly better than most.
OEX gives 5.9 g of gas per 500 ml, doubled (scaled) to 11.8 g per litre, in the 11-13.9 g band. The same figure is on the Tiso, Millets and Blacks pages.
Boil speed (calm air)
From maker's figures 7/10How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 7: Better than most.
OEX gives 2 min for 500 ml: scaled to 240 s for 1 litre, in the 210-269 s band. Countryfile timed 500 ml in exactly 2 min; Paul Messner timed 400 ml in 2 min 10 s in a breeze; Geoffrey Greenaway timed a cup in 2 min 19 s.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Wind performance*
Reviewers' average 8/10How well it keeps boiling in a breeze.
6 reviews on wind performance, e.g. "there is quite a breeze today so 2 minutes 10 seconds it's pretty impressive".
Simmer control*
Estimate: only 2 reviews about simmer control (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 6/10How low the flame turns down without going out, for real cooking.
2 reviews on simmer control, e.g. "keep everything boiling or simmering along nicely".
Reviewers disagree on this.
In short
Good for
- Solo wild camping and hiking: tea, coffee and boil-in-the-bag meals
- Windy pitches: four reviewers say the shielded flame copes with a breeze
Strengths
- OEX gives 2 min for 500 ml; reviewers timed 2 min to 2 min 19 s
- Built-in igniter, with a shielded burner and a neoprene sleeve; Rob The Rover boiled in storm-force gusts with no extra shield
- 370 g and a 0.6 L pot; a 110 g cartridge fits inside (OEX)
Weaknesses
- Only 0.6 L: suits one person, and no frying pan fits on top (Paul Messner, Geoffrey Greenaway)
- No canister stand in the box, and Paul Messner recommends one on uneven ground
- Thin folding handles will not turn the pot off the burner, and the lid fell off while pouring (Countryfile)
- No pressure regulator or cold-weather rating, so we do not mark it winter-ready
- The four reviews are of the 2023 black Heiro Solo Stove (GO code 636243), not the yellow set. OEX's published figures are identical on both (370 g, 600 ml pot, 2 min per 500 ml, 5.9 g gas per 500 ml, 1,700 W, piezo igniter, 10 cm across by 15.5 cm folded), and the shop photos show the same pot, heat-exchange skirt, burner base and valve; only the sleeve colour and print differ. The barcodes differ (black 5059917715472, yellow 5063761191696), and no review names the yellow set
