Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 8/10How much it adds to your pack. 8: Clearly better than most.
OEX gives 71 g on the Millets, Blacks and GO Outdoors pages. That sits in the 60-119 g band.
Packed size
From maker's figures 6/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 6: A bit better than average.
OEX gives two sizes. The pack size is 60 x 60 x 85 mm (the Millets and Blacks pages print 85 cm, a typo that GO Outdoors gives as 85 mm): 6 x 6 x 8.5 = 306 cm3, about 0.306 L, in the 0.2-0.59 L band. The folded stove alone is 53 x 72 mm, worked as a roll: about 0.159 L, one band up. We use the larger figure.
Boil speed (still air)
From maker's figures 8/10How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in still air. Wind slows every stove: see Wind performance. 8: Clearly better than most.
OEX gives 3 min 25 s for 1 litre: 205 s, in the 190-229 s band (the same on the Millets, Blacks and GO Outdoors pages). English Woodsman boiled 400 ml in 2 min 15 s on a new canister, with no wind or temperature given; that is a different volume, so it is not scored. He quotes 3,200 W, which is not OEX's figure: OEX gives 9,620 BTU/h (about 2,820 W) and GO Outdoors prints 2,750 W, the lower figure, which is the one used here.
Wind performance
Estimate from maker's specs: windshield in the box 3/10How well it keeps boiling in a breeze, as sold, without an extra windshield. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Estimate from maker's specs
In short
Good for
- Solo trips with a small pot or mug, where weight matters more than wind performance
- Walkers who want a stove small enough to fit inside a mug
Strengths
- 71 g, with a small carry bag in the box (Camping on the wild side)
- Three pot supports that fold up and down; OEX gives a pan support range of up to 107 mm
- OEX gives 3 min 25 s for 1 litre; English Woodsman boiled 400 ml in 2 min 15 s
Weaknesses
- No independent test of wind or simmer control, so those are estimates, not reviewed scores
- No igniter: carry a lighter or ferro rod
- No pressure regulator, so not for winter use (not rated for -10 °C)
- Small pan supports suit small pots; OEX says to use a canister stand at all times
- Packs to 6 x 6 x 8.5 cm by OEX's own figure, bigger than the folded stove alone
