Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
Estimate from maker's specs: the maker's weight 3/10How much it adds to your pack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Rain protection
From maker's figures 4/10How well the fabric and seams keep out heavy, long rain, when new. 4: A bit below average.
OEX's 9,000 mm (on the Blacks and GO Outdoors pages, which carry OEX's own copy) is in the 5,000-9,999 mm band. OEX's copy says 'taped seams' without saying whether all seams are taped, so seams are shown as not stated; the score is 4 out of 10 either way, as that is also the most a critical-seams-only jacket can score.
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: 2-layer build with a hanging liner 3/10How much warmth the jacket itself adds. Most shells add little: wear a warm layer under them. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

In short
Good for
- Walkers who want pit zips and a wired-peak hood without paying for GORE-TEX
- Occasional use rather than all-year heavy rain
Strengths
- Stretch 70D shell that Steve Cleverdon found tough against straps and brambles
- Wire-stiffened, fully adjustable hood and an internal storm guard behind the AquaGuard front zip
- PFC-free DWR; mesh back panel helps venting under a pack
Weaknesses
- 9,000 mm is the 2 band; Steve Cleverdon notes the original Aonach was rated 10,000 mm
- Heavy: 640 g measured in a size S, and OEX gives no weight
- Breathability is only 10,000 g/m2/24h (respectable, not outstanding)
- Only one independent review so far, written after a few weeks of testing
- Women's equivalent is the OEX Fortitude II, sold separately
