Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 3/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Blacks and Alpinetrek both give a minimum weight of 2.35 kg, in the 2.0-2.69 kg band (Alpinetrek's packed weight is 2.76 kg and Cotswold Outdoor's 2.56 kg). Ultralight Outdoor Gear's page lists a total of 1.87 kg, but its own parts (fly 881 g, inner 1,153 g, poles 713 g) add up to 2.75 kg, so we do not use that figure.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 1/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 1: A real weak point.
Fly 1,200 mm is the 1,200-1,499 band, band 2 (3 out of 10), then one band lower because the floor is under 2,000 mm. Blacks and Alpinetrek give the floor as 1,200 mm and Ultralight Outdoor Gear as 1,500 mm; either way it is under 2,000 mm, so it is the 1 band. The footprint included in the box helps protect the floor.
Wind
Estimate from maker's specs: maker's season rating (fewer than 3 reviews about wind) 5/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
No published review says how it copes with wind, so this is an estimate from the maker's season rating.
Space
From maker's figures 8/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 8: Clearly better than most.
3.0 m² inner floor ÷ 2 people = 1.5 m² each, in the 1.35-1.59 band. Floor 223 x 132 cm with a 112 cm peak and near-vertical walls.
Packed size
From maker's figures 3/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
Packs to 58 cm long x 18 cm across: 3.1416 x 9 x 9 x 58 = 14,759 cm³, so 14.76 L, in the 10-14.9 L band.
In short
Good for
- Two people who want a roomy freestanding tent for summer and mild-weather camps
- Campsite stays and short backpacking trips where space matters more than weight
Strengths
- 3.0 m² floor and a 112 cm peak, with near-vertical walls for a big inside
- Two doors and two vestibules (0.9 m² each)
- Freestanding, with strutted fly vents for airflow
- Footprint included
Weaknesses
- Low waterproof ratings: fly 1,200 mm and floor 1,200 mm
- Heavy for backpacking at 2.35 kg minimum, and packs to about 14.8 L
- Rated 3 season only
- No independent hands-on review of the UK Aurora Ridge found, so wind, pitching and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
- Shops list different weights (1.87 to 2.35 kg minimum); we use the figure most shops agree on
