Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 6/10How much it adds to your pack. 6: A bit better than average.
392 g packaged (MSR's Tech Specs; 117 g for the stove alone), in the 350-449 g band. UKC weighed 394 g; The Great Outdoors and Outdoors Magic list 389 g.
Fuel use
From maker's figures 6/10How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 6: A bit better than average.
MSR says 14.8 litres per 227 g canister, which is 15.3 g per litre, in the 14-19.9 g band. For 0.5 litre in still air The Great Outdoors used 10 g and UKC 6 g.
Boil speed (calm air)
From maker's figures 5/10How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
MSR says 2.5 minutes for 0.5 litre, scaled to 300 s for 1 litre, in the 270-329 s band. Testers' 0.5 litre times scale to 294 s (UKC), 330 s (The Great Outdoors) and 260 s (SectionHiker), so some land either side of that band; we band MSR's figure.
In short
Good for
- Solo walkers and pairs on three-season trips who want a built-in pot but the option of their own cookware
- Newer backpackers moving up from a bare burner (UKC)
Strengths
- Pot supports flip out to take other cookware up to 20.3 cm across (MSR)
- Rounded pot base is easy to clean and simmers without burning, per UKC and Outdoors Magic
- 392 g packaged; burner, stand and a small canister nest inside the pot
- Stretchy canister stand fits MSR, Jetboil and Snow Peak canisters (SectionHiker)
Weaknesses
- Tall at 18 cm and the pot does not lock to the stand, so it can tip (UKC, SectionHiker, Outdoors Magic)
- Only partly shielded from wind: SectionHiker says it gives none, UKC says partial
- MSR lists a 1 litre pot, but The Great Outdoors and Outdoors Magic report a 600 ml fill line (about 900 ml to the brim)
- Testers' 0.5 litre boil times scale to 260 to 330 s per litre, either side of MSR's 300 s figure
- SectionHiker burned rice on the rounded base, so keep to water and soupy food
- MSR gives no winter rating, so we do not mark it winter-ready
