Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight for its size

From maker's figures 8/10

How much it adds to your pack for the amount it holds. 8: Clearly better than most.

MSR's page (US and EU, same table) gives 0.30 kg for the pot and 1.7 L; its ounce figure converts to about 301 g. 300 g for 1.7 L = 176 g per litre, in the 150-219 g/L band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 272 g, which would be 160 g per litre, in the same band; Needle Sports and Absolute Snow print 300 g.

Cooking and ease of use

Estimate from maker's specs: what it is made of 7/10

In short

Good for

  • Reactor stove owners who cook for two or three, or melt snow, and want a larger pot
  • A second pot so one can cook while the other boils water

Strengths

  • 300 g for 1.7 L, 176 g per litre, the best weight for its size of the Reactor pots
  • Heat exchanger fully encloses the Reactor stove's burner, which MSR says gives the system its wind resistance
  • Clear strainer lid and a folding, locking handle
  • Packs to 13.5 x 16.8 cm (MSR)

Weaknesses

  • Works only with the MSR Reactor stove (MSR); a plain stove can't use it
  • MSR's Feb 2024 recall covers the earlier part number (06901): Ultralight Outdoor Gear's barcode matches it, while Trekitt lists the current part (14271) MSR's recall page offers a free replacement handle for the earlier part (in Europe, by email to customerservice@cascadedesigns.ie)
  • No independent review of the pot alone found
