Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 7/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 7: Better than most.
MSR's minimum weight of 1.36 kg sits in the 1.0–1.49 kg band (1.54 kg with stakes, guylines and sack).
Rain protection
From maker's figures 1/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 1: A real weak point.
Fly 1,200 mm is the 1,200–1,499 band, band 2 (3 out of 10), then one band lower because the floor is only 1,800 mm, under 2,000 mm. Reviewers found it kept them dry in real rain.
Wind
From reviews 6/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 6: A bit better than average.
Reviewers disagree (2 to 4): CleverHiker rated it strong once guyed out and two others found it fine in gusts, but T3 found the fly vents flap noisily and the long pole legs bend, and the mostly-mesh inner is draughty and cold.
Reviewers disagree on this.
Space
From maker's figures 8/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 8: Clearly better than most.
MSR's 2.95 m² inner floor ÷ 2 people = 1.475 m² each, in the 1.35–1.59 band; it has no taper, so two wide mats fit side by side.
Packed size
From maker's figures 6/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 6: A bit better than average.
Packs to 51 cm long x 14 cm across: 3.1416 x 7 x 7 x 51 = 7,851 cm³, so 7.85 L, in the 7–9.9 L band.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Pitching*
Reviewers' average 8/10How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.
7 reviews on pitching, e.g. "Setup is a breeze, even in a breeze.".
Reviewers disagree on this.
Condensation*
Reviewers' average 9/10How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.
3 reviews on condensation, e.g. "condensation on the inner was minimal".
In short
Good for
- Two people sharing on summer or mild-weather wild camps in sheltered spots
- Couples who want two wide sleeping mats side by side and room to sit up
- Warm, midgey nights where good airflow and low condensation matter more than warmth
Strengths
- Big, rectangular inside with no tapered foot end, so two wide mats fit and you can sit up comfortably
- Light for a freestanding double-skin tent, and easy to pitch the same way round either end
- Very well ventilated, with little condensation reported
- Two doors and two porches, with rain gutters on the doors, plus roomy gear pockets and a washing line
- Muted green fly is discreet for wild camping
Weaknesses
- Low waterproof ratings (fly 1,200 mm, floor 1,800 mm); reviewers suggest a footprint and careful pitch spots on wet ground
- Mostly mesh inner is cold and draughty in cool, windy weather; T3 calls it effectively a two-season tent (shops and Trek & Mountain say three-season), and reviewers point UK hill campers to the heavier Hubba Hubba HD
- Inner goes up first, so it is awkward to pitch in the rain
- Velcro on the fly vents is small and can flap noisily in strong wind, and the long pole legs can bend in gusts
- Only 8 short stakes come in the box, and you need a few more to guy it all out properly
- Porches are useful but not big
