Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 8/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 8: Clearly better than most.
MSR's minimum weight of 1.07 kg is in the 1.0–1.49 kg band; 1.23 kg with stakes, guylines and sack (der-eskapist weighed 1,232 g).
Rain protection
From maker's figures 1/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 1: A real weak point.
Fly 1,200 mm is the 1,200–1,499 mm band, band 2 (3 out of 10), then one band lower because the floor is only 1,800 mm, under 2,000 mm. Reviewers in heavy Sudeten rain and a wet-grass pitch stayed dry, so the figures are conservative.
Wind
Estimate from maker's specs: maker's season rating (fewer than 3 reviews about wind) 5/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
No published review says how it copes with wind, so this is an estimate from the maker's season rating.
Space
From maker's figures 10/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 10: The best you can buy for this.
MSR's 1.82 m² inner floor for one person is in the 1.6 m²+ band. The floor is a true rectangle about 81 cm wide, so a wide mat fits; peak height is 99 cm.
Packed size
From maker's figures 7/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 7: Better than most.
Packs to 46 cm long x 13 cm across: 3.1416 x 6.5 x 6.5 x 46 = 6,106 cm³, so 6.11 L, in the 4–6.9 L band.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Pitching*
Reviewers' average 8/10How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.
3 reviews on pitching, e.g. "is exceptionally easy to set up".
Reviewers disagree on this.
Condensation*
Estimate: only 1 review about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.
1 review on condensation, e.g. "Durch das großflächige Mesh im Innenzelt und die zwei Belüftungsklappen im Außenzelt hatte ich keine ernsthaften Probleme mit Kondensation.".
In short
Good for
- Solo walkers who want a roomy freestanding double-skin tent for spring to autumn
- Anyone who needs to move or re-pitch camp fast or pitch on rock, sand or a platform where pegs will not hold
- Side sleepers and people with a wide mat: the floor is a true rectangle 81 cm wide
Strengths
- Roomy for one: 1.82 m² floor, 99 cm peak height and a 0.74 m² vestibule
- Freestanding, one hubbed pole, pitched in minutes; easy to move after pitching
- Light for its space at 1.07 kg minimum, packing to 46 x 13 cm
- Lots of mesh and two fly vents for airflow and little condensation (all reviewers)
- Good storage: gear loft with clothesline and a pocket at each end
- Solution-dyed, PFAS-free fabrics and metal fly-corner hardware
Weaknesses
- Low waterproof ratings on paper: 1,200 mm fly and 1,800 mm floor
- Light fabrics and a thin 8.7 mm pole: a footprint is advised, and der-eskapist broke a pole on his second pitch
- Mostly-mesh inner is draughty and cold in winter; best kept for warmer months
- About 110 g heavier than the previous model (SectionHiker), and not the lightest freestanding tent
- Fly door rolls up on one side only, and the stakes are plain Mini-Groundhogs without hooks
