Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight for its size
From maker's figures 5/10How much it adds to your pack for the amount it holds. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
MSR's pages give 630 g for the whole set (its ounce figure converts to 629 g) and a 2.4 L pot. MSR publishes no volume for the two mugs or the plates, so capacity is the pot alone: 630 g for 2.4 L = 263 g per litre, in the 220-299 g/L band. Ultralight Outdoor Gear prints 0.4 L per mug (not on MSR's page): counting them would make 3.2 L and 197 g per litre, a 4. We band the lower figure. Shops weigh the set at 650 to 684 g (Ultralight Outdoor Gear's page gives 650 g in its list and 684 g in its header; Rock+Run 657 g), all heavier than MSR's figure.

In short
Good for
- Two people who want a pot, two insulated mugs and two deep plates in one nested set
- Melting snow and boiling water for two in a big 2.4 L aluminium pot
- Keeping a small stove and gas canister inside the nest (PaleoHikerMD)
Strengths
- One 2.4 L hard-anodised aluminium pot, a strainer lid, two insulated mugs and two plates in a nest about 18.3 cm across and 12.2 cm high (MSR)
- Mugs have measuring marks inside, handy for dried meals (PaleoHikerMD)
- Hard-anodised aluminium spreads heat more evenly than titanium (MSR)
- Lid doubles as a strainer, and the Talon handle folds over to lock the nested set together (MSR)
Weaknesses
- Plastic parts on the handle mean it can't go over an open fire (MSR; PaleoHikerMD)
- No cutlery or carry bag in the box (PaleoHikerMD)
- MSR publishes no mug or plate volumes, and shops weigh it at 650 to 684 g against MSR's 630 g
