Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 1/10How much they add to your pack. 1: A real weak point.
Mountain Equipment lists 580 g, in the 470 g and over band, well clear of the edge.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 7/10How well the fabric and seams keep out heavy, long rain, when new. 7: Better than most.
A named GORE-TEX Pro membrane with no mm figure published by Mountain Equipment, so the GORE-TEX rule gives 7 (an estimate: a 9 or 10 needs reviews). Seams are taped throughout (Mountain Equipment's page as archived on 12 Sep 2025; the current page no longer lists it). That archive copy is the same trousers (GORE-TEX Pro 80D, 580 g, £450), and GO Outdoors' page also says fully taped seams.
In short
Good for
- Winter climbing, alpine mountaineering and ski touring in severe weather
- Long days that start and finish in your overtrousers, over boots, crampons or skis
- Anyone who wants the toughest fabric (80D GORE-TEX Pro) and accepts 580 g
Strengths
- GORE-TEX Pro 80D 3-layer fabric throughout, with taped seams throughout (Mountain Equipment)
- Full-length two-way YKK AquaGuard side zips and a two-way fly zip, accessible when roped up
- Cordura kick strips, bonded hip overlays and zip-out internal snow gaiters
- Adjustable braces and a semi-elastic waist; alpine fit with articulated knees
Weaknesses
- 580 g is heavy for walking: the Saltoro is 360 g
- Mountain Equipment's current page no longer says the seams are taped; we use its archived page
- Built for climbing and winter use, which is more than most walkers need
- No independent test of this version, so fit and durability aren't scored
