Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: insulated glove 7/10How warm they keep your hands at camp and on the move. 7: Better than most.
Estimate from maker's specs
Weight
From maker's figures 4/10How much they add to your pack. 4: A bit below average.
180 g for the pair, Mountain Equipment's figure on its product page (size not stated); Tiso lists 180 g too. It sits exactly on the lower edge of the 180-279 g band (179 g would be band 3), so it is the 2 band.
Waterproofing
From maker's figures 4/10How well they keep your hands dry and the wind out, from how they are made. 4: A bit below average.
Mountain Equipment's own DRILITE insert, listed on the glove's page as 'waterproof and breathable'. Its DRILITE page calls DRILITE its own waterproof and breathable membrane technology and names no platform for this glove. The glove's page says only the drawcord closure 'seals out the elements'; no page says the insert is sealed or seam-sealed, and DRILITE is not a named membrane maker's fabric. The method's 4 band needs a sealed insert, so an own-brand insert with no sealed statement is the 2 band, the same call as the Mountain Equipment Mountain Glove and the OEX Summit. It would be the 4 band if Mountain Equipment said the insert is sealed.
In short
Good for
- Cold, wet winter hill walking and mountaineering
- Axe and pole use: goatskin palm and roll-top fingers
- Winter days that call for a waterproof, insulated glove with a long cuff and a drawcord
Strengths
- DRILITE waterproof, breathable insert in a 160D nylon Oxford outer
- Water-resistant goatskin leather palm and reinforcements
- Midweight microfleece lining on the palm and fibre pile on the back of the hand
- Single-handed drawcord, carabiner carry loops and removable wrist tethers
- Sizes S to XXL; guaranteed against defects in components, materials and workmanship for the reasonable life of the product
Weaknesses
- Insert not described as sealed, so waterproofing scores 4
- 180 g for the pair puts it at the edge of the 180-279 g weight band
- No touchscreen fingertips
- Insulation amount is not stated, so warmth cannot be compared on numbers
- No independent review of the current build found, so warmth, dexterity and durability scores are blank
