Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Warmth

Estimate from maker's specs: insulated glove 7/10

How warm they keep your hands at camp and on the move. 7: Better than most.

Estimate from maker's specs

Weight

From maker's figures 6/10

How much they add to your pack. 6: A bit better than average.

110 g for the pair, Montane's figure (size not stated; Montane's US page agrees; Workwear Express repeats 110 g): the 110-179 g band, exactly at its lower edge (the band above starts under 110 g). Cotswold and Snow+Rock list 115 g for the older 'Duality Waterproof' glove (different product code and barcode), which is in the same band.

Waterproofing

From maker's figures 10/10

How well they keep your hands dry and the wind out, from how they are made. 10: The best you can buy for this.

Montane lists a 'GORE-TEX glove insert, durably waterproof, windproof and breathable', and its materials table lists the waterproof insert as its own layer, under a softshell outer with a PFC/PFAS-free water-repellent finish. A named GORE-TEX membrane with no published mm figure is the top waterproofing band (a sealed insert from a named membrane maker). Montane doesn't use the words 'seam-sealed'; the score rests on the named GORE-TEX insert.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Dexterity*

Estimate: only 1 review about dexterity (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How easily you can work zips, buckles and a phone with them on.

1 review on dexterity, e.g. "the gloves still feel flexible and easy to use without compromising on dexterity".

Durability*

Estimate: only 1 review about durability (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How well the palms, seams and fingertips hold up over seasons of use.

1 review on durability, e.g. "The brushed tricot fabric is incredibly soft and durable".

In short

Good for

  • Cold, wet days in the hills and winter walking where you want a waterproof, insulated glove you can work in
  • Hiking, walking, mountaineering and trekking, which Montane lists
  • Montane's Connect conductive panels allow phone use without taking them off

Strengths

  • GORE-TEX insert for waterproof protection, with PrimaLoft Gold insulation, at 110 g for the pair
  • Stretch softshell outer with a PFC/PFAS-free water-repellent finish
  • Goat-leather palm and pre-curved fingers
  • Suede-style nose wipe on the thumb and a low-profile hook-and-loop cuff
  • One reviewer says it kept hands warm and dry in the Cairngorms and while digging a snow hole

Weaknesses

  • One reviewer's pair only got wet after 2+ hours of moving snow
  • Some dexterity only: one Montane reviewer says not to expect fine work from insulated gloves
