Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Warmth
Estimate from maker's specs: fill type and jacket weight (no fill figures published) 5/10How warm it keeps you standing still at camp. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.
Estimate from maker's specs
Weight
From maker's figures 7/10How much it adds to your pack. 7: Better than most.
Montane lists 420 g, in the 350-449 g band. No size is given, so this may not be the men's M weight. UKHillwalking weighed a men's M at 450 g, which would be the 450-599 g band, band 3 (5 out of 10); Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 429 g for a Medium. Montane's published figure comes first, so we band it, and give the tester's figure here and in the weaknesses.
In short
Good for
- Winter camp evenings and cold, dry days when you are standing still: UKHillwalking calls it a big-baffled, high-lofting jacket made for stationary use
- Belays and cold hill stops, worn over a base layer and fleece
- Drizzle as an outer layer: the ExpeDRY down and DWR outer shed light rain
Strengths
- 170 g of 800+ fill power ExpeDRY goose down and big baffles for a jacket listed at 420 g
- Synthetic underarm panels to manage moisture where it builds up
- Regular fit leaves room for a base layer and a midlayer
- Self-sealing cuffs, adjustable hood and a stuff sack made from the jacket's own fabric, which can be used to patch it
- RDS down and a lifetime guarantee against faults
Weaknesses
- Warmth, damp performance and durability aren't scored: only one independent test of the current version found
- No packed size or volume published
- Heavier on UKHillwalking's scales: 450 g in a men's M against Montane's 420 g
- 20D outer needs care around rock and thorns; not waterproof, the DWR sheds light rain and snow only
