Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Protection

From maker's figures 6/10

What it removes from water, and how well that is proved. 6: A bit better than average.

Electro-adsorptive cartridge with no pore size given. Lifesystems claims 99.99% of viruses, 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.9% of protozoa, and says an ISO 17025:2017 accredited lab tested it. That names the lab's accreditation, not a microbial test standard, and the report is not published. NSF 42 and NSF 53 cover the membrane's taste and health-effect claims, not microbes. Bacteria, protozoa and viruses claimed without a named standard or a published test, so 3.

Flow rate

Estimate from maker's specs: filter type (no flow rate published) 3/10

How fast clean water comes through when it is new. Real flow drops as it clogs: see Ease of use. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Weight

From maker's figures 5/10

How much it adds to your pack. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

255 g for the bottle with its filter and lid (Lifesystems). Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 260 g, and Outdoors Magic quotes 255 g in its table and 225 g in the tester's words. In the 150–299 g band either way, so 3. The weight includes a 1 L bottle.

Ease of use

Estimate from maker's specs: filter type 7/10

Filling, squeezing or pumping effort, how fast it clogs in peaty or silty water, and how easy it is to clean. 7: Better than most.

In short

Good for

  • Walkers who want filtering as they drink, from a 1 L bottle
  • Short trips where the 600 L cartridge life is plenty
  • People who want a virus claim in a bottle, for travel as well as UK hills

Strengths

  • Claims removal of viruses, bacteria and protozoa in one 1 L bottle
  • 255 g with the filter fitted
  • Cartridge rated to 600 L, with a ring to mark the change date
  • Wide neck makes filling and cleaning easy (Outdoors Magic)

Weaknesses

  • No microbial test standard named and no lab report published, so the virus claim cannot be checked
  • No published flow rate; Outdoors Magic found it slower than other filters
  • Cannot be used to decant filtered water into a pot or other bottle (Outdoors Magic)
  • Not safe after freezing: Lifesystems says not to let the cartridge freeze
  • Heavy next to straws and squeeze filters
  • Tannins from peaty water can shorten the filter's life (Lifesystems)
