Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 6/10

How much the pair adds to your hands and pack. 6: A bit better than average.

Leki gives 248 g per pole at 100-135 cm (Leki UK and Leki.com agree), doubled to 496 g for the pair: the 450-549 g band. TGO lists 485 g a pair for the older pole; Leki's figure is the one scored.

Packed size

From maker's figures 4/10

Whether they fit inside or along a rucksack. 4: A bit below average.

Leki gives 67 cm collapsed on both pages: the 65-74.9 cm band.

In short

Good for

  • Hillwalkers and backpackers who want a sturdy aluminium pole with a 100-135 cm range
  • Walkers who pitch a trekking-pole shelter and need poles that reach 135 cm
  • Rough ground where a bent aluminium shaft is a safer bet than a snapped carbon one

Strengths

  • Aluminium HTS 6.5 shaft in 16, 14 and 12 mm tubes; TGO found it sturdy
  • Wide 100-135 cm length range on external Speed Lock Plus levers
  • Aergon Air grip with a rubberised head and a foam extension below, so you can hold lower without changing length
  • TGO found the grip top very grippy and comfortable on long descents
  • Skin Strap 5.0, trekking baskets and carbide Flex Tips included

Weaknesses

  • 496 g a pair, in the 450-549 g band
  • Packs to 67 cm, much longer than a folding pole (41 cm for the Makalu FX Carbon)
  • TGO found the unpadded strap dug into the hand (its pair had the older Skin Strap 4.0) and the lower foam extension narrow and slippery
  • TGO notes it ships with trekking baskets but no snow baskets
  • Lock, grip and durability scores are blank: only one usable independent review (TGO), and its pair had the older strap
