Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Protection
From maker's figures 8/10What it removes from water, and how well that is proved. 8: Clearly better than most.
Removes bacteria and protozoan cysts with a 0.1 µm hollow-fibre membrane. Katadyn's manual says it meets the US EPA's microbiological water purifier standards for bacteria (99.9999%, Klebsiella terrigena) and protozoan cysts (99.9%, Giardia and Cryptosporidium): a named standard for bacteria and protozoa, so 4. It does not remove viruses (the manual says so), which is why it is not a 5.
Flow rate
From maker's figures 7/10How fast clean water comes through when it is new. Real flow drops as it clogs: see Ease of use. 7: Better than most.
Katadyn gives 2 L/min when new, in the 1.8–2.49 band. Testers say the fast flow is real but the carbon insert slows it: Adventure Alan found it cuts new flow roughly in half, and flow keeps falling as the membrane loads (the BeFree cannot be backflushed). Banded on Katadyn's figure.
Weight
From maker's figures 9/10How much it adds to your pack. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
76 g for the filter, cap and 1 L soft flask (Katadyn), under the 90 g line. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 77 g.
Ease of use
From reviews 8/10Filling, squeezing or pumping effort, how fast it clogs in peaty or silty water, and how easy it is to clean. 8: Clearly better than most.
Fill the wide-mouth flask, screw on the cap, squeeze or drink: Hiking Daily had stream water in the mouth in 15 seconds, Better Trail scores user-friendliness 5/5, OutdoorGearLab 8/10. It drops a point for the drawbacks they name: no backflushing (swish and shake only), the membrane must be wet before first use or hardly any water comes out (Whiskey Wanderer), it clogs faster in silty water, and it only takes its own 42 mm flask. Better Trail and Hiking Daily used the double-layer 1 L and OutdoorGearLab tested several versions; the cap, filter and handling are the same as on this single-layer bottle, and only its durability is not (see durability).
In short
Good for
- Day hikes and fast overnighters where clean streams are never far away
- Carrying one litre instead of three: scoop, filter and drink in seconds
- Solo use where weight matters more than filter lifetime
- Trips with no viral risk, such as most UK hills and moors away from farmland
Strengths
- 76 g for filter and 1 L flask
- Katadyn rates flow at 2 L/min new, and testers found it fast and easy to squeeze
- Wide 42 mm mouth scoops from shallow streams; the empty flask folds flat
- Cap is sturdier than the original BeFree's and has a metal hinge
- Optional carbon insert (200 L) takes the plastic and peaty taste off the water
- Cleans by swishing in clean water, with no syringe to carry
Weaknesses
- Does not remove viruses; Katadyn tells you to add tablets or boil if viruses are a risk
- Not safe after freezing: Katadyn says not to let the membrane freeze, and there is no way to test it afterwards
- The Sawyer Squeeze has a much longer rated life (378,541 L)
- Flow falls as it loads and it cannot be backflushed, only swished and shaken
- Must be wetted before first use; a dry membrane gives only a trickle
- Only fits its own 42 mm flask, so no drinks-bottle or gravity set-up
- Adventure Alan calls this blue single-layer flask thinner than the black double-layer 1 L that Katadyn also sells, and no long-term test of this version was found; one reviewer's 1 L grew a pinhole at a seam after a few months (Whiskey Wanderer, version not stated)
