Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 3/10How much it adds to your pack. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.
550 g is Jetboil's published system weight (Jetboil US and UK pages, repeated by GearJunkie). Jetboil says the figure leaves out the 27 g fuel stabiliser, as it does for the Flash 1.0L and Zip. Australian Geographic weighed 563 g bare. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 493 g (a shop figure for pan and burner). All sit in the 450-649 g band.
Fuel use
From maker's figures 10/10How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 10: The best you can buy for this.
Jetboil says 12 litres per 100 g canister (US and UK pages), which is 8.3 g per litre; Australian Geographic and GearJunkie quote 10 litres (10 g per litre). Either is under the 11 g line.
Boil speed (calm air)
From maker's figures 7/10How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 7: Better than most.
Jetboil says 130 s (2 min 10 s) per 0.5 litre (average over the life of a can) on its US and UK pages, scaled to 260 s for 1 litre (scaled), in the 210-269 s band. GearJunkie and Trekitt's table print 2 min 15 s (270 s, band 3), but that isn't what Jetboil's own pages say, so it isn't used. Australian Geographic timed 1 min 45 s for 0.5 litre in still air at about 19 °C.
In short
Good for
- Solo or two-person three-season trips where you cook real meals as well as boiling water
- Walkers who want simmer control and a non-stick pot in a one-pot system (1.2 L, packed 12.7 x 9.7 cm)
- Trips of a few nights where one 100 g canister packs inside the pot
Strengths
- Regulated 1.8 kW burner with fine simmer control, and a ceramic-coated pot that wipes clean
- Australian Geographic timed 1 min 45 s for 0.5 litre in still air; Jetboil quotes 2 min 10 s
- 8.3 g of fuel per litre boiled (Jetboil: 12 litres per 100 g canister)
- Turn-and-click igniter you can use one-handed in gloves, and burner, stabiliser and a 100 g canister pack inside the pot
Weaknesses
- 550 g before fuel and stabiliser, 179 g heavier than the Flash 1.0L (371 g)
- Only a 100 g canister fits inside; a 230 g canister does not (Australian Geographic)
- The pot does not lock onto the burner and can feel tippy when nearly empty (Australian Geographic)
- Exposed gales still cut efficiency (Australian Geographic); no cold-weather rating beyond the regulator
- The igniter failed once in strong wind at altitude (GearJunkie) and the lid lip can work loose in a pack
