Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 7/10How much it adds to your pack. 7: Better than most.
340 g is Jetboil's published system weight (Jetboil US page, repeated by Trekitt). Jetboil says the figure leaves out the 27 g fuel stabiliser, as it does for the Flash 1.0L and Zip, and it lists the 35 g pot support in the box separately. SectionHiker weighed 369 g with the stabiliser and 400 g with the pot support as well; Cool of the Wild found about 550 g with a part-used 100 g canister. The published figure is in the 250-349 g band; the box as sold (with stabiliser and pot support, about 402 g) would be the 350-449 g band.
Fuel use
From maker's figures 10/10How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 10: The best you can buy for this.
Jetboil says 12 litres per 100 g canister (Jetboil US page), which is 8.3 g per litre, under the 11 g line.
Boil speed (calm air)
From maker's figures 6/10How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 6: A bit better than average.
Jetboil says 135 s (2 min 15 s) per 0.5 litre (average over the life of a can), scaled to 270 s for 1 litre (scaled), in the 270-329 s band; SectionHiker, Cool of the Wild, Run Ultra and The Trek all repeat the 2 min 15 s claim. SectionHiker timed 2 min 10 s for 0.47 litre at about 2 °C; Cool of the Wild's best of ten tests in mild air was 2 min 40 s for 0.5 litre.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Wind performance*
Reviewers' average 8/10How well it keeps boiling in a breeze.
3 reviews on wind performance, e.g. "It resists moderate winds okay but isn’t fully windproof, so I’d always carry a foil windscreen.".
Reviewers disagree on this.
Simmer control*
Reviewers' average 8/10How low the flame turns down without going out, for real cooking.
5 reviews on simmer control, e.g. "The Jetboil MicroMo simmers very well and so is excellent for cooking rather than just boiling water.".
In short
Good for
- Solo or two-person three-season wild camps where you want to simmer a meal as well as boil water
- Shoulder-season trips down to about -6 °C, the lowest temperature Jetboil rates the regulator for
- Walkers who want a one-pot system that packs with a 100 g canister inside (packed 10.4 x 15.9 cm)
Strengths
- Regulated burner with a wide simmer range: Chris Townsend says it simmers very well, and SectionHiker calls simmer control its best trait
- Jetboil rates the regulator for consistent output down to -6 °C
- 8.3 g of fuel per litre boiled (Jetboil: 12 litres per 100 g canister)
- SectionHiker timed 2 min 10 s for 0.47 litre at about 2 °C; Jetboil quotes 2 min 15 s for 0.5 litre
Weaknesses
- The 0.8 L pot is small: Cool of the Wild notes the instructions say to fill it no more than half (400 ml)
- Not fully windproof (Chris Townsend) and no winter rating: -6 °C is the limit, not for deep cold
- Jetboil's 340 g leaves out the 27 g stabiliser and 35 g pot support in the box: SectionHiker weighed 400 g with both
- Tall, narrow pot is unsteady on uneven ground without the stabiliser (SectionHiker) and poor for pan-style cooking
- The push-on lid works loose (Cool of the Wild) and the piezo igniter can fail over time, so carry a lighter
- Boil time of 270 s per litre is slower than the Flash systems (240 s)
