Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 6/10

How much it adds to your pack. 6: A bit better than average.

371 g, the figure Jetboil's UK page gives (Jetboil's system weights leave out the 27 g canister stabiliser, as on the Zip) and We Are Explorers' spec box repeats. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 394 g and Live for the Outdoors 398 g. All sit in the 350-449 g band.

Fuel use

From maker's figures 9/10

How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Jetboil says 10 litres per 100 g canister (Ultralight Outdoor Gear's spec table), which is 10 g per litre, under the 11 g line.

Boil speed (calm air)

From maker's figures 7/10

How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 7: Better than most.

Jetboil's figure is 120 s for 0.5 litre (average over the life of a can), scaled to 240 s for 1 litre (scaled), in the 210-269 s band. Switchback Travel, Live for the Outdoors and We Are Explorers each give it as Jetboil's claim, and Ultralight Outdoor Gear prints it in Jetboil's own spec wording; Jetboil UK's page says only 100 s with no volume, so we use the slower 120 s. We Are Explorers timed 2 min 5 s for 0.5 litre in shelter and Switchback Travel timed 4 min for 1 litre.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Wind performance*

Reviewers' average 7/10

How well it keeps boiling in a breeze.

7 reviews on wind performance, e.g. "Thanks to the classic integrated pot design, the burner is largely shielded from gusts.".

Simmer control*

Reviewers' average 5/10

How low the flame turns down without going out, for real cooking.

7 reviews on simmer control, e.g. "Like most of the other integrated canister stoves, the Flash does not simmer particularly well.".

In short

Good for

  • Solo or two-person three-season wild camps where most cooking is boiling water for drinks and freeze-dried meals
  • Walkers who want a quick, simple one-pot system with a built-in igniter and a colour-changing heat indicator
  • Trips where 1 litre of water at a time suits the group, on sheltered or moderately breezy pitches

Strengths

  • Jetboil quotes 120 s for 0.5 litre; We Are Explorers timed 2 min 5 s for 0.5 litre and Switchback Travel 4 min for 1 litre
  • 10 g of fuel per litre boiled (10 litres per 100 g canister)
  • Twist-and-light igniter, heat-indicator cosy and a rubberised base grip
  • Burner, stabiliser and a 100 g canister pack inside the 1 litre pot (packed 10.8 x 19.05 cm)

Weaknesses

  • 371 g is heavier than the lighter one-person systems, and the packed height is a tall 19 cm
  • Poor at simmering: Outdoor Gear Lab scores simmering 5.7 of 10, so it is for boiling water, not cooking
  • Fuel use falls by about 25% in wind (Outdoor Gear Lab), and Switchback Travel notes it is still susceptible to wind, cold and altitude
  • LFTO lists 'not the most stable' as a drawback
  • No regulator, so output drops in cold weather; Jetboil does not rate it for winter use
