Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 4/10

How much it adds to your pack. 4: A bit below average.

504 g is Jetboil's published system weight (Jetboil US page, repeated by Military Kit and The Big Outside). Jetboil says the figure leaves out the 27 g fuel stabiliser, as it does for the Flash 1.0L and Zip. Live for the Outdoors weighed 514 g without the canister or stabiliser and SectionHiker lists 533 g. All sit in the 450-649 g band.

Fuel use

From maker's figures 9/10

How much fuel it burns to boil a litre in calm air: less fuel to carry. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Jetboil says 10 litres per 100 g canister (Jetboil US page), which is 10 g per litre, under the 11 g line. Live for the Outdoors repeats Jetboil's claim of about 24 one-litre boils from a 230 g canister (9.6 g per litre).

Boil speed (calm air)

From maker's figures 7/10

How fast the maker says it boils 1 litre in calm air. 7: Better than most.

Jetboil says 120 s per 0.5 litre (average over the life of a can), scaled to 240 s for 1 litre (scaled), in the 210-269 s band. Military Kit, Live for the Outdoors and SectionHiker (2 min 0 s per 0.5 litre, 4 min 0 s per litre) all give the same claim. Trekitt's table prints 4 min 30 s per litre (270 s, band 3), which doesn't match Jetboil's own page, so it isn't used. Live for the Outdoors timed 2 min 14 s for 0.5 litre in a light breeze of about 8 km/h at 12 °C; SectionHiker timed about 4 min for 1 litre at about 10 °C.

In short

Good for

  • Pairs or groups of three or four who mostly boil water for drinks and freeze-dried meals
  • Three-season trips where one 1.8 L pot saves boiling in rounds (maximum recommended fill 1.25 L)
  • Campsite or car-to-trail cooking where weight matters less than speed and fuel use

Strengths

  • Jetboil quotes 120 s for 0.5 litre; Live for the Outdoors timed 2 min 14 s in a light breeze and SectionHiker about 4 min for 1 litre
  • About 10 g of fuel per litre boiled, so one canister goes a long way on a group trip
  • Redesigned burner: twist ignition, three-point pot lock and silicone folding handles (Live for the Outdoors, SectionHiker)
  • Burner, stabiliser and a 100 g canister pack inside the pot (packed 12.4 x 20.9 cm)

Weaknesses

  • 504 g before fuel and stabiliser, heavy for one or two people; Live for the Outdoors weighed 514 g
  • Maximum recommended fill is 1.25 L, not the full 1.8 L
  • No regulator, so output falls in the cold and as the canister empties; not for winter
  • Not impervious to wind: boil times crept up in a breeze (Live for the Outdoors) and Jetboil sells a windscreen separately
  • Little simmer control, and the volume marks inside the pot are hard to read
