Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight for its size

From maker's figures 9/10

How much it adds to your pack for the water it holds. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.

Igneous lists 64 g for 1 L: 64 g per litre, under 100 g/L. Ultralight Outdoor Gear lists 68 g (68 g per litre), still band 5; Everyday Backpacker weighed one at 64 g.

Packed size (empty)

From maker's figures 5/10

How much room it takes up when it is empty, for the water it holds. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

A rigid bottle does not shrink. Igneous gives 240 mm tall and 81 mm across: 3.1416 x 4.05 x 4.05 x 24 = 1,237 cm³, so 1.24 L empty for 1 L held, in the 0.7–1.29 band. It is close to the 1.3 line; 1 L is Igneous's figure (BIKEPACKING.com measured 1.045 L to the top of the threads, which would score the same).

In short

Good for

  • Ultralight backpackers who want a 64 g reusable 1 L bottle in place of a disposable Smartwater bottle
  • Squeeze filters with a 28 mm thread, such as the Sawyer Squeeze and Platypus QuickDraw
  • Shoulder-strap bottle pockets and side pockets: it is shorter than a Smartwater bottle (24 cm tall)

Strengths

  • 64 g for 1 L: 64 g per litre, the lightest of the new reusable 1 L bottles BIKEPACKING.com tested
  • Soft, easy-squeeze body, so it works well pushing water through a filter
  • Tethered cap that opens one-handed, and volume marks that will not wear off
  • Shorter and wider than a Smartwater bottle, so it sits lower in a shoulder pocket
  • Igneous says it is boil-safe and carries a lifetime guarantee

Weaknesses

  • Narrow 28 mm mouth: hard to clean without a brush, and ice or tablets will not go in (CleverHiker, BIKEPACKING.com)
  • BIKEPACKING.com broke one by dropping it on the cap, while CleverHiker's drop tests left only scratches, so durability is an estimate, not a reviewed score
  • 81 mm across, so it does not fit standard bottle cages
  • Overtightening the cap can warp it and spoil the seal (Ultralight Outdoor Gear)
