Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 3/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Hilleberg's minimum weight is 2.4 kg (fly, inner and poles only), in the 2.0-2.69 kg band; the extra pole and bigger fly add about 0.4 kg to the Nallo 2. Complete with pegs and bags it is 2.9 kg. Two people sharing carry about 1.2 to 1.5 kg each.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 8/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.

Hilleberg's handbook gives Kerlon 1200 (the Nallo's fly) as 5,000 mm HH (ISO 811), in the 3,000 mm+ band, and the Red Label floor as 15,000 mm, so no point is taken off. Some shop pages and reviews quote 10,000 mm for the fly; Hilleberg's own 2026/2027 handbook says 5,000 mm, so we use that. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.

Wind

Estimate: only 1 review about wind (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 8: Clearly better than most.

Not enough evidence: only Walkhighlands tested the GT itself (several nights of pouring rain in Scotland and a trek in Iceland) and found it stable in high winds as long as it isn't pitched side-on. The many Nallo 2 reviews are of the smaller-porch version, so they don't count for the GT.

Space

From maker's figures 6/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 6: A bit better than average.

Hilleberg gives 2.6 m² of inner floor for two people: 2.6 / 2 = 1.3 m² each, in the 1.15-1.34 band. The inner is the same as the Nallo 2: about 220 cm long and 100 cm high at the front. The GT's porch is 2.3 m², much bigger than the Nallo 2's 1.3 m².

Packed size

From maker's figures 4/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 4: A bit below average.

Hilleberg's packed size is 48 x 18 cm: 3.1416 x 9 x 9 x 48 = 12,215 cm³, so 12.2 L, in the 10-14.9 L band. This is with the poles and pegs rolled inside; packing the tent and poles separately makes it smaller.

What reviewers say (out of 10)

Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score

Condensation*

Estimate: only 1 review about condensation (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.

1 review on condensation, e.g. "C'est également un sans faute pour la ventilation car nous ne constatons aucune condensation.".

Durability*

Estimate: only 1 review about durability (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 8/10

How well the fabric, poles, zips and seams hold up over seasons of use.

1 review on durability, e.g. "High quality materials and construction, 4 season toughness and very stable in high winds, huge porch, long inner tent length, durable".

In short

Good for

  • Two people who expect days of wet weather and want a big porch to cook in and take off waterproofs under
  • All-season UK camping, from spring to winter, where a tunnel tent that stays low and stable in wind is wanted
  • Long walks like the Cape Wrath Trail, where the extra weight of the porch is worth it when shared between two

Strengths

  • Rated by Hilleberg for all-season use (Red Label), with the fly going all the way to the ground
  • Huge 2.3 m² porch with a door on each side, and the front can be rolled back as a covered sitting area
  • 5,000 mm fly and 15,000 mm floor
  • Inner and outer pitch together, so the inner stays dry in rain
  • Walkhighlands found it stable in high winds when not pitched side-on, after nights of pouring rain in Scotland and Iceland

Weaknesses

  • Heavy and bulky: 2.4 kg minimum, 2.9 kg complete, 12.2 L packed
  • Not freestanding: it needs good pegging (20 V-pegs supplied), and pitching side-on to the wind is a problem
  • Three poles to insert, and the porch adds about 0.4 kg over the Nallo 2
  • Hilleberg does not use the "4-season" label: it rates the Nallo Red Label "All season use", which we treat as its 4-season rating. It is the lighter Red Label build (9 mm poles), not the stronger Black Label Nammatj
  • Wind, pitching and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores: only one review covers the GT itself
