Our ratings (out of 10)
1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score
Weight
From maker's figures 9/10How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
Hilleberg's current minimum weight is 960 g (fly, inner and pole only), under 1.0 kg. Complete with pegs and bags it is 1.2 kg; The Great Outdoors weighed its sample at 1,100 g, and older listings say 870 or 906 g from before the Kerlon 1000 fabric.
Rain protection
From maker's figures 8/10How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.
Fly is 5,000 mm HH (3,000 mm+ band) and the floor is 15,000 mm, so no points are taken off. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.
Wind
From reviews 7/10How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 7: Better than most.
Most reviewers found it solid in strong wind. One owner had the single pole pushed flat in 95+ km/h (he had left off the pole guy lines) and it still stood; two reviewers of the earlier version saw the fly touch the inner in gusts or found it slightly noisy.
Space
From maker's figures 9/10Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 9: Among the best you can buy for this.
1.7 m² inner area for one person is in the 1.6 m²+ band. It is 215 cm long, but only 93 cm high, so tall people should check.
Packed size
From maker's figures 7/10How much room it takes in your rucksack. 7: Better than most.
Packs to 43 x 13 cm: 3.1416 x 6.5 x 6.5 x 43 = 5,707 cm³, so 5.7 L, in the 4-6.9 L band.
What reviewers say (out of 10)
Ratings marked * are from reviews and are not part of the trip score. They are reviewers' scores, not our own measurements. How we score
Pitching*
Reviewers' average 8/10How quickly and easily one person can pitch it, including in wind and rain.
4 reviews on pitching, e.g. "I’ve found the single poles at each end make getting a taut pitch easier than with the Akto’s double poles.".
Condensation*
Reviewers' average 7/10How dry it stays inside on still, damp nights; higher is drier.
4 reviews on condensation, e.g. "This system doesn’t completely prevent condensation, but I’ve had fewer issues than with similar tents.".
Durability*
Reviewers' average 8/10How well the fabric, poles, zips and seams hold up over seasons of use.
3 reviews on durability, e.g. "its reliable durability and reassurance of protection from the elements makes it well worth the price".
In short
Good for
- Solo 3-season wild camps and long walks where you want a tough tent for under 1.2 kg
- Windy UK hill pitches and small, awkward pitching spots, as long as it is pegged well
- People who want a tent to last many years and don't mind paying for it
Strengths
- Very light for how strong it is: 960 g without pegs and bags, 1.2 kg complete
- Quick and easy to put up alone, with the inner and fly pitched together
- Roomy for a solo tent, with a 0.8 m² porch big enough to cook in when it rains
- Very waterproof fabrics: 5,000 mm fly and 15,000 mm floor
- Mesh ends and roll-down covers give good airflow in mild weather
Weaknesses
- Condensation can build up, and in wind-driven rain the fly can slap against the inner
- Single pole and not freestanding: it needs careful pegging and extra guy lines in strong wind
- Roof is low (93 cm), and one reviewer of 1.91 m found it a tight fit
- The fly can touch the inner in gusts or cross-winds, and one reviewer of the earlier version found it slightly noisy in light wind
- Hilleberg rates it three-season only (Yellow Label, snow-free use), and it has one door
