Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 3/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 3: Below average. Fine for some trips, not others.

Highlander's weight of 2.59 kg is in the 2.0-2.69 kg band (2.635 kg with its bag). Two people sharing carry about 1.3 kg each.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 8/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.

Highlander gives the fly as 4,000 mm, in the 3,000 mm+ band, and the floor as 5,000 mm, so no point is taken off. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.

Wind

Estimate: only 1 review about wind (fewer than the 3 we need, so never above 8) 6/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 6: A bit better than average.

The Great Outdoors found good weather protection during Scottish spring testing that included moderately strong winds. This is the regular Respite 2, not the Extended Tunnel.

Space

From maker's figures 5/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

Highlander gives no floor area. We worked it out from its inner tent size: 210 cm long, 130 cm wide at the head and 105 cm at the foot (The Great Outdoors confirms the taper), so 210 x 117.5 cm mean width = 2.47 m², or 1.23 m² each, in the 1.15-1.34 m² band. The area is our own working, not a published figure, and ignores the rounded corners.

Packed size

From maker's figures 6/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 6: A bit better than average.

Highlander's packed size is 47 x 14 cm: 3.1416 x 7 x 7 x 47 = 7,235 cm³, so 7.24 L, in the 7-9.9 L band.

In short

Good for

  • Two people on a budget who want a roomy tunnel tent for weekends
  • Shared carrying, at about 1.3 kg each

Strengths

  • Fly 4,000 mm and floor 5,000 mm
  • Packed 47 x 14 cm (7.2 L)

Weaknesses

  • 2.6 kg is heavy for a two-person backpacking tent
  • Inner tapers from 130 cm at the head to 105 cm at the foot
  • Only one independent review of this tent, so wind, pitching and durability are estimates, not reviewed scores
  • Highlander gives no season rating: the 3-season figure above is our own assumption (a customer on Highlander's page calls it 4-season lite, with only 4 corner guy lines)
