Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight for its size

From maker's figures 7/10

How much it adds to your pack for the amount it holds. 7: Better than most.

GSI's US page gives 99 g for the mug, lid and sleeve and 503 ml in its specification line (converted from US units). 99 g for 0.503 L is 197 g per litre, in the 150-219 g/L band. The same page's text gives 517 ml (192 g per litre, also band 4); we band the lower capacity. Shops: Ultralight Outdoor Gear 102 g and 500 ml (its text also says 550 ml), Wood To Water 136 g and 500 ml (273 g per litre, band 3; GSI doesn't give that figure).

In short

Good for

  • Hot drinks at camp for one person, and a bowl for porridge or a freeze-dried meal (500 ml)
  • Measuring water for rehydrating meals (markings up to 400 ml, read from inside)
  • Walkers who want a light mug with a lid and a handle that folds flat

Strengths

  • 99 g for 503 ml, 197 g per litre (GSI)
  • Sealable sip lid, foam sleeve to hold hot drinks, non-slip base and webbing handle that folds flat (GSI)
  • Measuring marks in ml and cups on the inside (GSI; Three Points of the Compass on the older mug)
  • Lifetime warranty against material and workmanship defects (GSI)

Weaknesses

  • No hands-on review covers today's version: the write-ups we found all tested older mugs with a neoprene sleeve
  • Insulation is modest: a better-insulated mug keeps drinks hot longer (older mugs: GearJunkie, Three Points of the Compass)
  • Not spill-proof in a pack: steam pressure can lift the press-fit lid (Ultralight Nerd, older mug)
  • Polypropylene holds food smells; mice chew the plastic (Ultralight Nerd, GearJunkie, older mugs)
  • Doesn't nest inside a typical cook pot (PopUpBackpacker, older mug)
  • Lid is tight to remove and has crevices that catch food (Three Points of the Compass, older mug)
  • UK shops disagree on weight: 102 g to 136 g
