Our ratings (out of 10)

1 to 10, compared with the whole market. Each says what it's based on. How we score

Weight

From maker's figures 1/10

How much it adds to your pack. This is the whole tent: two people sharing can split it. 1: A real weak point.

Published weights vary: Alpinetrek gives 3.3 kg (packed) and Grand Canyon's own site 3.57 kg total. No minimum trail weight is published; either figure is far into the 2.7 kg+ band.

Rain protection

From maker's figures 8/10

How well it keeps out heavy, long rain. 8: Clearly better than most.

Fly 3,000 mm HH is in the 3,000 mm+ band; the 4,000 mm floor is over 2,000 mm, so nothing is taken off. The printed figure alone gives 8 at most: a 9 or 10 needs 3 reviews that say it stays dry in real storms.

Wind

Estimate from maker's specs: maker's season rating (fewer than 3 reviews about wind) 5/10

How steady it stays in strong wind on open ground. 5: Does the job. Average for wild-camping gear.

No published review says how it copes with wind, so this is an estimate from the maker's season rating.

Space

Estimate from maker's specs: inner floor area per person 8/10

Room to lie, sit up and keep kit inside. 8: Clearly better than most.

Estimate from maker's specs

Packed size

From maker's figures 1/10

How much room it takes in your rucksack. 1: A real weak point.

Grand Canyon's site gives 57 cm long x 20 cm across: 3.1416 x 10 x 10 x 57 = 17,907 cm³, so 17.91 L, in the 15 L+ band. Alpinetrek says 58 x 16 cm (11.7 L, a 2 point band); the maker's current figure is used.

In short

Good for

  • Two people on a tight budget who want a roomy tent for short, low-level trips
  • Car-supported camps and festivals where weight and pack size don't matter
  • Campers who like a covered porch for kit and cooking out of the rain

Strengths

  • Tunnel shape with a constant inner height, so a lot of room for two
  • Fly 3,000 mm and floor 4,000 mm HH, the highest rain band
  • Breathable inner with mesh panels and vent hoods for airflow
  • Reflective guylines and a mosquito net

Weaknesses

  • 3.3 to 3.57 kg is very heavy for a two-person backpacking tent
  • Packs to 57 x 20 cm (17.9 L), too big for most rucksacks
  • Not freestanding: it needs pegs and guylines to stand up
  • Fibreglass poles and steel pegs are heavy and fibreglass can splinter
  • One door and one porch, so one sleeper climbs over the other
  • No independent test, so wind, pitching and durability are unproven
  • Published weights and packed sizes disagree between shops and the maker
  • No season rating from Grand Canyon; three seasons is from Alpinetrek and is our assumption for UK use
  • Grand Canyon publishes no floor size, so space is an estimate, not a reviewed score (one shop gives 210 x 160 cm for the inner)
